But the Soviet space program was largely successful. The Chilean privatization scheme in contrast has produced spotty to dismal results...gee, do you want to applaud a despotic regime's successes or failures--the choice is yours.

You might want to take a read on the Cato site, they speak of it as being successful and relaible transition from a failing, dismal state system.

Typical of political arguments. There's a side for every perspective and each is hide-bound it its own parochial certitude.

When you find ultimate truth, pass me a serving, please.

...the best kernal of truth I could offer would be to leave fascism in the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

Wait, you're not suggesting that I'm a fascist or support a fascist agenda, do you? I expect that line of crap from KV and his entourage but I though better of you.

Oh, you may also want to check the fascist state of Sweden, they have partially privatized their retirement system too.

No, I generally try to stay away from nasty descriptives--those are best left to folks who voluntarily seek out the halls of power. You're political viewpoints are misguided, but you're no fascist. I do think it's a salient point to note the historical genesis of the concept, if one intends to build a case upon that concept. In this situation, I don't think it's a red herring, since their privatization scheme was an integral part of their fascist strategy to corporatize the entire nation. This was done to the Chilean people, via dictatorial rule, not as part of a popular mandate.

I don't know the particulars of the Swedish example, but given that they have a much more humane and comprehensive safety net, it's fairly clear that the stakes cannot be nearly as high for their seniors. Over here we treat people like dirt, so seniors falling through the cracks will just be old dirt.

RE: Why all the lying about Social Security?

Old dirt for seniors and broken dirt for the disabled.

In comparison to lives bought cheap by a nanny state that wants the benefit of risk (a daring society), without the failure necessary for risk to have meaning.

Look, its easy to portray the sides in this debate in an ugly light, but I don't think it's entirely honest.

Nobody wants to starve the incapacitated nor force old farts to eat pet food. Nobody wants to deprive their citizens of reward for their daring, nor penalize people for frugality and wise investment. Somewhere between those unfortunate extremes is where society is like to find comfort. Is that point static, immovable and immutable, against all external and internal forces? I don't think so. Society must have the ability to experiment and adapt or modern society will be like a trilobite on a cooling planet.
