Bot,

Seeing that clip makes it worse. Why would we send our best to a place where they are fodder for loonies who want to kill them or die trying? Besides, it distracts from the verbal assaults that made this thread amusing. I mean, I bet you guys are surprised I could come back from that shot from Alfalfa. Beheaded or not, he is obvioiusly not one to dice with on an internet forum.

Hey Kirk, what the hell do I do with these Winstons now? Jim

Bot, your choice of words dodges the issue. Do men and women with missiles, guns and bombs "represent" us in Iraq? Not my idea of ambassadors. No, I think they are fulfilling a perverse mission of our present oil-industry-run administration. I would reserve our finest for defending our nation against clear and present dangers from others who would do us harm, not waste their dedication to this nation on decisions that are unclear and misguided, that make America resemble the Nazis we defeated at great cost only a few generations past. While we let them die for a people who continue to resist our culture being forcibly injected in their society, we are growing weaker.

We have been down all that before though. I know, it makes no difference to you that the WMD story used to start the whole mess was a sham, because you thought a policy of using force to secure oil we don't actually need (no one has refused to sell it to us, so why kill our own to get it and still pay for it?). But it bothers a number of us. The switch and bait was a lie, and I know you don't like that either. You prefer to think this was not a grand scheme or, that using WMD as mere a lever to get the door open to grab oil was justified. I don't, I think the whole WMD fiasco has been swept under the rug because our President feels he sold the "Free the Iraqi People" as the reason we are there. It is all bullshit.

But we have been there before. Jim

The military represents us just as much as any other official branch of government. But you dodge the question.

You then proceed to use your words and ideas and clothe them in my persona. Please don't do that. Just go with what you know. Allow me to describe what I believe. Would you like for me to?

B, exactly what part of that film is so compelling for you? Any film school dropout could produce similar dreck syrup sentimentality on a subgroup of the population. How about a gripping photo montage of cub scouts, hairdressers, a Barbie convention, a Star Trek convention, a Quilting Bee...ad nauseum. Don't you have any other facts or evidence with which to build your case for our imperial misadventure?

I think what appeals to me the most is that I know it will irritate the shit out of some people. People who make emotional appeals on their side of the issue are probably especially susceptible to emotionality.

Though I am unswayed by sentimental arguments, do I like the sentimentality of it. I like that it celebrates feeling good and proud of our military, a feeling in my own case for which I will never apologize.

What is it exactly that you don't like about it?

Do you think it is wrong for people to see our soldiers through a sentimental eye?

Should we not see pictures of our soldiers in warm relations with ordinary Iraqis?

Is it all a lie? How do you know what the lie is?

I don't feel much about it at all as a matter of fact, but I will refer to the old comedy skit and call it "Truly Baaad Cinema".
