RE: Worlds leaders PRAISE Iraqi elections
OH, I don;t think democracy in Iraq is going away any time soon - its just going to be a permenant state of bloodbath just like Palestine is. It is the logical outcome whenever a government is formed by using violence and injustice. The correct way to have pursued this would have been a US occupation of Kurdistan to protect the Kurds, who actually would have welcomed us as liberators and who were already a separate state from Iraq in 2003, and then from there we could have supplied some type of indigenous uprising against Hussein with weapons and cash until he was toppled by internal forces. The key has always been winning the cooperation of the people in ratting out the bad guys. Instead we made the bad guys heros to the Sunni populace. Now they will be around for a long time, using car bombs to make true democracy impossible, and they will sabotage oil installations to keep us from getting what we are really after. I think at the heart of this is that Bush's original plan went all awry - the original plan was for us to walk in a rose-strewn path, installing our stooge Chalabi as dictator and then proclaiming them "liberated" - the way we "liberated" Kuwait by installing the fascists we needed to keep the oil flowing. The miscalulation was in the idea that a puny force of 150,000 men could control a country of 25,000,000 people, a people who are a collection of religious fanatics, radical socialists, and the descendents of Ali Baba and his Forty Thieves. The entire thing has been an act of stupidity that has done nothing to enhance our national security and everything to threaten our economic security and world leadership positions.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
