RE: Soros Says Kerry's Failings...
It was a tough year. The best candidate for the Democrats was unfortunately a Republican, Mr. McCain, and I still think he would have won if he switched parties. Absent that, their best candidate was Al Gore, who could have run on an I Told You So platform. I pretty much knew Kerry was going to lose the day he said given what was known today, he would vote the same on War in Iraq. That one statement caused the entire organization Dean built to evaporate overnight as an asset to the Kerry campaign. Kerry just took the fire out of the whole Dem base with that one statement, and after that it just became business as usual with the 60's retreads running the Dems into another brick wall. In addition, the statement that he would have voted for it, before he voted against it, had to be one of the most stupid statements a politician could make. Talk about shooting oneself in the ass.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
