RE: Congratulations due...

Hey did you guys see those actors that the neocons put onstage at the State of the Union? You know the two fat broads and the fat old guy. They sure knew how to fake it, didn't they?

I mean, who could possibly believe anythin so trite and contrived? Parents who lost a loved son in combat would give a strong remembrance of his life, his dog tags, to a woman who is risking her life to bring decency to a currupted land, her home.

Patriotism is so quaint an anachronism for us sophisticates, huh?

I thought patriotism was dying for your own country.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Yes, or caring enough to object when your country goes wildly off course--like invading another country, killing thousands of its inhabitants, and thinking that, somehow, this is a sign of compassion.

Nah, patriotism is simple: You believe your country is worth your life. Stand for what you believe. Put your life on that belief and keep your eye on the horizon, not on your feet.

There's some great research being done along those lines. Help is just around the corner...

RE: Congratulations due...

Are the hundreds of thousands of American folks who marched, wrote letters, gave money and spoke out against this "war" any more or less patriotic than the simpletons who lined up with the party line,"cuz CIC said so, and by golly it must be true" -- are they just a lesser species of Patrioticus Americus, or do they dwell in some murky ooze, awaiting classification at a later date? If you think your country is on the wrong path, and is in fact commiting acts contrary to our "mission", how far can one go to halt that process and still remain patriotic?
