Espionage is one thing, but I'm talkin bout messing directly with the form and makeup of our guv'mnt. We've done just this sorta thing on countless occasions elsewhere, so under which circumstances and with whom would you find this acceptable here in the good ol U.S. of A? Or, as I asked earlier, are we so special that no one else is allowed to do as we do? Do as we say, not as we do?

Okay, let me try to form a general question and see whether that might be more easily explored.

In what ways and for what reasons is it approrpiate for one gov to influence another?

I can't even explore that without asking this: Is there such thing as a 'friendly' gov or is it more reasonable to describe all relationships as a matter of common and competing interests?

I do not think that there are friendly nations or enemy nations, except for purposes of simplicity of speech. For example, I often say that western democracies are our natural friends. I don't mean that we share a tent or attend each other's children's bar mitzvahs. I mean that we share a stable set of interests that overwhelm the interests where we compete.

In the same sense I may say that some state, say N Korea, is an enemy state. I don't mean that we are necessarily hunting for a way to do them ill, what I mean is that we have more important issues in contest than in common.

I do not think we can proceed until we get past this portion.

I maintain neutral status for all nations. Nations are made up of people, and some people are nice, some aren't. I don't go around fomenting strife and mayhem in other people's lives and I prefer others maintain the same policy. To answer my own question, there is no other nation state I'd want to be meddling in my country's internal affairs, period...except maybe Canada...or possibly Germany or Sweden, but that's it!

The concept of US exceptionalism IS the largest impediment to international peace and stability we have these days. The threat of international "terrorism" has simply exacerbated that impediment.

Laughing fascists:

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

That's interesting. Which is worse, betrayal of trust by a friend or by a stranger?

You know the answer to that...neutral status also implies neutral trust--hold them cards close to your chest.

I agree. Which would mean that I believe I would feel greater betrayal by a 'friendly' country meddlin' than an unfriendly country. I'd not be surprised to discover that say, the ChiComs tried to influence a presidential administration through covert means. I'll bet they're doing it right now, too. Same with the Russians. But I would be very surprised if a German or French plot were uncovered.

Like when we've busted Israeli spies. To me, that behavior was far worse than if the USSR had done it, though obviously the USSR was a vast threat and Israel never has been a threat.

No friendly nations, no enemy nations, just a community of neutral players. Trust is best reserved for human relations, and again, play those cards close to your chest.

That's an excellent point, Z. It leads one to understand that it is an anthropomorphism to use words like, "trust" and "friendship" and "enemy" when talking about relationships between states.

I accept that, completely.

If states cannot have human relationships, then can a state behave either morally or immorally?
