So should normal healthy people subsidize the higher life insurance risk of a manic depressive who is hell bent on killing themselves but don't have the guts to jump out a window or put a gun to their head?

They may appear perfectly normal in the office...but outside the office?

Or a Child care worker who moonlights as a prostitute? Sure its her time but there are communicible things that can effect others in the workplace. Those that are done by choice..........which makes all the difference.
How about some wacko who rides a murdercycle? Why should the rest of us subsidize that higher life insurance risk? Hmmmmmm?????

I know this is a bit off-topic but I'm confused. It appears KV is implying that he has his own business.
In another thread, he said he was part of an IT group.
Late last year we got into a discussion about labor unions and he said he was in a union...

So what is it - he has a business that is unionized where he's in his own IT group?

Hmmmm

Seems to fit whatever he's talking about...

not trying to pick a fight JJames, but is it possible that KV could have, in the year in question, changed occupations or circumstamces of employment?

Do we call the police of people for playing their music too loud or throwing crap on you? To some folks second hand smoke is harmful. In my case, I am allergic to tobacco and have to take allergies shoots once a week. If it gets too smoky: my noise bleeds and my eyes water. So smokers are infringing on my rights, because I cannot go out to restaurants that have lot of smokers.

We have laws for calling someone the N word, but have no recourse when someone blows smoke on you, that can be harmful to you. I wish we had non-smoking laws like California and New York.

You know a few years ago, 5 I think it was some young smart a$$ punk was chain smoking on an international flight well into the non smoking section........got real cocky with me too.........somewhere over Newfoundland, Canada I told him I was going to take that damn cigarette shove it up his a$$ and snuff it out on the backside of his f*&%ing eyeballs if he blew one more lungfull of smoke my way.

And I said it loud enough the Pilot heard me.

We had an interesting conversation in the Galley shortly after that.

You're missing the point. The article isn't about that. It's about forcing people out of their jobs because of perfectly legal behavior they exhibit away from the workplace, which has no impact whatsoever on their performance at work. This isn't about people sneaking out for a cigarette at work -- if it were, I'd agree that you have a point. It's about people who only smoke on their own time away from work. You think the personal lives of your employess is your business -- I don't.
They had the top executives for this company on Fox News. They stated the issue was simple - smokers cost too much in healthcare costs.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Go back and re-read those threads. I own my own business, I have since 1998. Prior to that I worked as a computer programmer, the same field my business is involved in. Prior to that, I was a union ironworker, a job that allowed me to put myself thru college.

RE: Quit Smoking or Quit Your Job, U.S. Company Says

This is a bit off topic, but i'm writing it anyway.

I smoked a pack a day for 20 years starting in 1984.
i had a heart attack on January 31, 2004, and i have not smoked a cigarette or anything else since an hour before that event. Quitting has been really easy when you are SCARED into it!

My opinion of smoking has obviously changed.

Now I think that cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, ANY tobacoo and ALL tobacco should be outlawed.
