Best high speed internet

I'm on dial up and am looking to change to high speed since my wife recently got a new computer and wants to get on-line also. What do other people have and how much do you pay.
Comcast cable internet around here is $53 a month without cable TV.
Quest offers a dsl around $26 but it doesn't look like it is as fast as cable.
Recommendations?

RE: Best high speed internet

Cable seems a lot more stable than DSL. I use ATT DSL Dedicated IP at work, and Roadrunner Cable at home. I get cut outs on long downloads on my DSL. Cable I have zero problems with. Both are very fast. I'd pick cable.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I've had both and the Comcast is the better of the two. For some strange reason I had cable at the house but couldn't get it at the office across the street. Head to head, the cable is much faster. The qwest DSL is barely DSL, I think I was getting about 115bps(?) and not the 256 advertised. But compared to a dial up either will be a huge step up.

Comcast cable is the benchmark for all internet service in the U.S. Had it for about 5 years. Don't know what I'd do without it.

Kerry, cable is much faster -- something like 10 - 15 times faster than DSL. Highly recommended. Just turn your PC on in the morning and your automatically online -- life is superb! Don't forget to take the savings of disonnecting a phone line into account.

That would be actually having a phone line again.

Before you spend money on this, you should check to see if you can pick up any WiFi signals in your home. I remember you mentioning having bookstores nearby, so perhaps there is a coffee shop with free WiFi available. Often, the WiFi can be picked up in the surrounding block. A WiFi card for your computer should cost $50-$70. Have a coleague with a WiFi laptop over for a discussion and see what he/she picks up...

That said, I'm a big fan of comcast's cable set up. It is extremely fast, and I've only had one problem with it in two years... a hurricane that knocked down the cable lines near my house.
