Wait, what's your major?
Don't rush into either one, I have a great CPM unit that will fit in your dorm and I assure you it will be a great conversational piece.
Girlz dig it![:p]
I used a CP/M machine for a while. I think it was an Osborne lugable. It was fun to program back in the olden days.

Bot, if you still had that CP/M machine, I would have given you the VisiCalc disc. [:D]

12" powerbook??? Those are so small and whimpy. For less money, you could get a 14" iBook with better hardware, or like I said, by the time you will be buying your computer, the 15" powerbooks will have decent prices due to the soon upcoming G5 powerbook....mmmm pure liquid cooled goodness. Good luck

.This is good advice. My kid just bought the laptop I'm using now: a 14" iBook. It comes fullly decked-out with a suite of good programs--burn cd's by drag and drop, itunes, Appleworks (a fast and small version of MS "Office"") and other programs that are good enough for most users.

It's light, the keyboard is okay and the battery lasts a long time. She got the superdrive--burns cd's and dvd's. I plugged it into our lan and it self-configured in just a couple minutes. I also downloaded a bunch of open source freeware, basicly Unix programs recompiled with Mac shell so you just click and it opens a terminal window then executes a command to run programs. The programs are an awful lot faster than on my older G-3 computer. Yesterday I found out how to log on as a superuser, I could feel the Force returning to my fingers as Unix commands came back to me. Unix is in there if you want it. I hid #root so my kid doesn't accidentally do something really stupid. That's the downside of Unix--too much power for newbies. Like that old Mickey Mouse, "Night on Bald Mountain" from Fantasia.
