Churches should pay taxes

Wife and I was looking at several gyms to join and was amazed on what churches offer. Several churches have bowling allies, indoor/outdoor tennis courts, indoor/outdoor swimming pools, and etc.

To me it is not fair for the local businesses to compete with churches because the churches are tax exempt.

If they aren't out to make a profit, they shouldn't be taxed. If they are scamming millions of Americans so they can buy mansions, then that behavior should be penalized.

I agree with danwatt, churches are not a buisness. They should not be taxed. But crimes should be punished.

What about churches involved in politics? Should they retain exempt status? How involved is okay? When is Free Speech violated?

It's easy to hide profits in the form of large salaries and church-paid perks. Most of these maga-church preachers live a jet set lifestyle - in fact many of them live the life of corporate CEO's with private jets and limos, and their highly paid staff pretty much have cush jobs compared to the real world. This stuff has gone way beyond the original intent - to provide a preacher and a place to worship tax free so even the poorest of the poor could build a church. Since when is running a bowling alley "worship"? These things have become big business enterprises. And what about people who run bowling alleys - isn't it wrong for them to have to compete with what is in effect a government subsidized business? It's gotten so bad in Houston its hurting the local property tax base. The latest mega-church in my neighborhood occupies 20 acres along I-45 - land that is worth millions as commerical property that will now not return one red cent to the taxpayers. IMO, anything devoted to the worship of God should be tax free. The preacher's salary should stop being tax free and instead work on an exemption system - they get an exemption for whatever the current average income is, currently around $40,000 - and then they pay taxes on the rest. Same with the house. This has become a shameless rip off, and most people would be surprised to know the immense impact it has on our economy.

RE: Churches should pay taxes

Wow,

Kvining and I agreed on something. I feel churches need to pay taxes on anything higher than the average salary and pay taxes on land over 2 acres.

And I thought our founding fathers wanted religion and government separate. I do not understand why our local churches are in politics.

Historically, Christianity has been primarily concerned with the accumulation of wealth and power. Why should such an institution be tax-exempt?

Is that how we're defining religion? It seems to me that more prone a religion is to practice the worship of God, the more they should be taxed. How about a vice tax, along the lines of alcohol and cigarettes?

RE: Churches should pay taxes

Ron, you paint with an awfully broad brush when you say that the church has always been concerned with accumulating wealth and power. There is some truth in that, but there is also lot of falsehood in it, too. SOME churches accumulate wealth. MANY churches are very careful about accumulating wealth. In fact some churches make conscious decisions NOT to keep a large amount of equity availiable as they feel it lessens their dependence on God. A large bank account can become the object of trust.
You turn a questionable practice in some churches into a polemic against all churches.
