Bush went and met with every Amish community - at list twice. You know who won the election...
Jezus -- how many Amish are there in Ohio? Think about it -- the Amish may have decided the fate of the nation. [:0]

...they don't even serve in the military do they? Go figure, a bunch of pacifists voted for the war-mongering putz because gays are such an all powerful "threat" to the institution of marriage in Amish country. "Well,I voted for Bush, because it was easier than thinking."

Interesting insight, Z. I think you're right about that, but too dismissive. They present an interesting opportunity to give us perspective on our current struggle to define an American paradigm.

These are folks who are so conservative they're mid-19th century anachronisms. To some extent, their norms helped shape the nation that we inhabit.

RE: More accurate map of electoral tendancies.

It is bizzare in the extreme. Not only are they pacificists, they are also usually opposed to any involvement with the State at all because it is sinful. So, in theory, they should be expecting the the US to be corrupt--it reinforces their theology. In addition, when is the last time a gay Amish man was running to be an Elder? How many Amish women are sneaking off to abortion doctors?
Why are they worried about these issues at all? If they've been able to keep their kids from using zippers for 100 years, keeping them from homosexuality and abortion would be simple.

Anyone have any links to serious Amish or Mennonite thinking on this topic? (A good Amish website[:D])

I think the problem the Amish are running into is that their theology of the State was developed in the 15th and 16th century prior to modern democracies and since they are so traditional, they haven't updated their theology to meet new conditions. For instance, in the above articles it states that it is ok for Amish to vote but not to hold office. That's because no one ever imagined Amish would vote when they forbid them from office. If they had, they would have forbid them from voting also.

I believe the Mennonites were for Kerry. They were mainly against the war in Iraq, and Kerry also wasn't too keen on abortion or homosexuality, so they went with him.

RE: More accurate map of electoral tendancies.

It gets even worse. The Hutterites are voting for Bush:"Who's going to vote them in if we Christians don't?" said Joel Decker, a member of Starland Hutterite Colony in Gibbon, Minn., who plans on voting in his second presidential election next month.
"I'm ultraconservative in the political arena," he said.

The Hutterites are out and out communists. (Who do the Hutterites vote for in Alberta, John?)

I'm beginning to think the only hope of the left is to go to Guyana, dig up Jim Jones body, clone him and have him run for president. Then there'd be the perfect combination of a religious wacko with the leftist values of social justice, economic fairness and racial equality.
