Slavery Reparations

I was just wondering what everyone's view of slavery reparations is. I have seen two different stances attributed to Sen. Kerry, and no commments by the President. I think that your answers will define you, as a person. To make myself clear, I am speaking specifically about the idea of paying a cash amount to all Black, U.S. citizens who can trace their ancestry to the slaves held by Americans, prior to Lincoln's freeing of them. This should be good!

RE: Slavery Reparations

I am very conflicted with this issue. On one hand, I think that blacks are still in a disadvantage as a result of slavery... as in slavery is partially responsible for the economic status of many blacks. On the otherhand, I don't see how doing anything now can fix a wrongdoing that ended over a hundred years ago. I think I'll just stay out of this one.

RE: Slavery Reparations

Reparations have already been paid......in BLOOD.
Recall if you can, the conclusion of Lincoln's 2nd Innaugural address. The part beginning with, " If every drop of blood drawn with the lash is repaid with one drawn by the sword..."
The blood of tens of thousands of non-slaveholding US citizens have paid the deby in full.

RE: Slavery Reparations

ugh...can I get reparations for when my grandfather came over from Germany at the beginning of WWII? His German accent did not endear him to Americans at the time, so he got s*&t jobs w/ S&*t pay.

This notion of reparations is just about as good as our government funding research to see if prayer will help your tumor shrink....

RE: Slavery Reparations

I have a mixed race friend. Will he get 1/4 what a non-mixed race individual gets?

My sister-in-law is Canadian and recently moved to the USA. How much of her taxes should go to paying for reparations?

Colin Powell's family emigrated to the USA from Jamaica. How much will Colin get paid?

Theresa Kerry emigrated here from Africa, what should she get paid?

My ancestor on my Mother's side was a union soldier who lost an arm at Shiloh. Can I reduce the payment by the value of his arm?

My Father's ancestor was a confederate soldier who lost his farm, seized by carpetbaggers as reparations. Could I apply that farm value to the reparation debt?

Lets be fair, ya'll.

RE: Slavery Reparations

Very much against it. Unlike reparations to Japenese detained in camps during WW II, those directly enslaved are no longer alive. Everyone else has had a century and a half to get on their feet. At some point, you have to take responsibility for your own actions.

Red Herring Alert!

...uh, reparations need not come in the form of "cash payouts". Simply creating a first class educational system that allows equal access to opportunties and advancement would constitute an appropriate mode of "reparations". In addition, eliminating the discriminatory practices in the financial, employment and housing industries would also go a long way toward achieving the goals embodied in the promise of Forty Acres and a Mule.

Since my answer will "define me as a person" I think I will abstain and remain an enigma.
