RE: John Kerry said to be ex-communicated by the Catholic Church
Thanks for such a genuine response to the Kerry posting.
My heart goes out to you and your family due to all the problems in the Church and the way they see it playing out. It's hard to have something be such a large part of your life in one sense and then to have it seemingly change without your control to the point that you don't want to be a part of it anymore.
I myself was raised Catholic and am still practicing. I knew a guy a year ahead of me in college who went on to becomea priest. Later it was discovered that he was exposing himself to alterboys. He is now in rehabilitation; I don't know if he did any jail time.
I see a difference between the killing of people in war and what we as Catholics believe is the killing of an unborn baby. One is completely helpless, while the other isn't. In one sense, a war is (should be) in defense of yourself or your country, while an unborn child is no threat to anything. So, for me, the connection isn't there. But I understand your aunt's frustration at not getting an answer.
I also am unclear about the connection between the Church's stance on abortion and political power. I think the only conncection between the two is that the legalization of abortion was done using the political/judicial process, so the Church must act in that vein to end legalized abortion. There are some things that cannot be ignored, regardless of the consequences, in my opinion.
Thanks for the post!
