]What kind of academic circles believe the search for search for scientific truth is delusion? Not scientific circles, I dare say.....
Almost all the humanities and social science departments. Any field in which the term 'deconstruction' gets bandied about regularly. Or any department which was depressed last week when Jacques Derrida died.

RE: Why?

I can't say I know who Jacques Derrida is, but I am familiar with deconstruction. I recall ingesting various hallucinogens during my college days and having bizarre and wildly entertaining discussions along those very lines. Still, limited by the constraints of our perception, scientific truths are by far the most satisfying. These truths provide a foundation for examination and skepticism unlike any other, and should be the cornerstone of nearly any scholastic education provided by these academics. This from one whose focus has always been math/science, if it wasn't already obvious...

I can't say I know who Jacques Derrida is,
Algerian/French philosopher who should have won the award for writing the most incomprehensible philosophical tracts of the 20th century. Pursued the insight that no text has a fixed meaning, not even the meaning assigned to it by its author. Emphasized the infinite play of meanings that can arrive from any text (text in the broadest possible sense).
People have taken from this insight, the view that even the scientific text (the world as experienced by scientists) has an infinite possibility of meanings. Thereby undermining the certainty and reliability of scientific insights.
One cause of our current cultural situation in which being radical and revolutionary is equated with holding relativistic epistemological beliefs as opposed to the older revolutionary ideas of aligning oneself with the proletariat.

I agree that is one of the most troublesome issues for the USA and world today. I wonder if better primary education of the masses can relieve some tension and be the most, dare I say, practical/scientific way (who-hoo) to remedy the issue. Could higher quality teachers through higher pay and perceived social standing be an answer? This requires sacrifice of the current gen and this or any gen may not register the need considering the slow erosion of belief in a possible after life.
