RE: Bad news for true nature lovers
they were originally set aside as you describe. But that was so long ago its no longer true.
Take a trip to Great Smoky Mtns NP. Its bumper-to-bumper RV and car traffic everywhere (it will be taht way in every NP in the USA within 20 yrs). Most major parks have concessinaires that run everything from airplanes to mule trains. Motels (er, 'lodges'), fully electric 'campsites' that look like RV parks in any tourist town anywhere. We have made access to wilderness a priority and have never understood that the act of accessibility destroys that which we cherish.
To be bluntly non-PC about it, want handicap access? It sounds great and compassionate, doesn't it? We just widen the trail, pave it, make it less steep, provide motorized transportation. After all, compassion is more important than a bunch of rocks on a muddy trail, right?
If that's okay, what's wrong with a snomo?
