RE: Question on homosexuality asked at the debate
Part of the difficulty of this thread is that there are too few choices in the vote. Orientation need not be either genetic or choice.
Is color preference or food preference a matter of choice? Is pet selection? Is mate selection? Do people choose to be sane or insane? Intelligent or dumb as a stump?
What I mean is that the whole issue, like most other attributes of existence, is not reducible to nature vs nurture. Life is way, way more complex than that.
It conforms with my libertarian views that what rational people wish to do with their own body parts is not an issue for the state. But on some issues, the 'ick factor' plays a big role. The consensual cannibalism in Germany has a humungous 'ick factor'. Intellectually, I think, "Heck, them boys agreed to it and everythang, so bon apatit!" But something else within me says, "Them boys is pure f**ked-up and we need to stop that stuff quick before it becomes a fad!"
The 'ick factor' definitely plays into the whole gay issue. The first few times most of us old fart straight guys try to get our minds around it we get the ick. But after a while, it doesn't seem to be any of my business, really. Then I take the next step of saying, "Well, they seem happy and are making successful lives, good for them." I find that my dislike for ol' Barney Franks has nothing to do with his sex life and everything to do with his socialism. And so forth.
The Mary Letourneou thing has a B-i-i-i-g ick quotient. What does a woman with children want with a preteen lover? We all know what the boy thought, "Hot dayem, I'm having sex with my teacher!!!" But what if the teacher were male and having sex with a 12 year-old girl? To me that is far worse. Its the ick factor, again. Also, that the boy and Letourneau are back together leaves me ambivalent. But if it were the hypothetical man recently out of prison and hookin'-up with the teenaged girl, I'd want another few months with Bubba for the mofo.
I think I can summarize by saying I don't know WTF to think. It makes my head hurt.
