As much as it pains me to take the side of the commie pinko leftist liberal weenie wackos, what has gone on at the FCC in the last few years is a travesty. Some classic examples of government for sale to industry lobbyists. As I recall, 3 of the 4 FCC commissioners are Repubs, and all 4 were appointed by Bush. The FCC chairman, Michael Powell, is Colin Powell's idiot son. He seems to have no other qualifications for the job other than his well connected daddy.
Who you callin "leftist" there boy?[8)]

Thank goodness threats of lawsuits against the news media has kept them from publishing something unfair to one of the candidates. That's what I like to see: The law going after the media. Nothing wrong with that.

I doubt Sinclair was really threatened by the lawsuit. It kind of gave the thing legitimacy. What caused them to cave was the stock price drop, and the threat of investors pulling out.

Actually, the lawsuit threat is pretty real - a lot of theater owners are pulling it on the advice of their attorneys because the film brands a number of people in the film, who now 35 years later are just regular folks and private citizens, as liars, commies and the like. From what I understand, the film is a potential goldmine for any former long haired VVAW guy in the film, because the producers did such a lousy job if ascertaining whether or not what they are saying is true.

The film is essentially a crude low budget hack job. I wonder why they picked a film that deals with 35 years ago for their smear job? In a way it makes me feel better about Kerry, if the best they could come up with for dirt is ancient history. On top of that, the Swift Boat guys have been running millions of dollars of this Nam Redux stuff in the swing states, and they apparently are now having little affect as the voters ho-hum the old stuff and concentrate on the issues. So in the end, nobody GAS, and all they have done is hurt themselves. I was amazed to learn they were a publically held company. Richard Scaife can get a way with stuff like this, but these are just corporate bozos trying to play big time politics. I bet their shareholders sue the crap out of them. They have reduced the value of the business.

Bot, when I invest in a publicly traded company I expect those in charge to uphold their fiduciary duty and act in the best interests of the company and therefore to protect my investment.
That is why I come here to discuss my politics and not at the office. A simple philosophy of not "shitting" where you eat. If Sinclair were privately owned they could make all the stupid ass decisions they wanted and only hurt themselves. Shareholders expect management to act in a manner that minimizes anything that could hurt their business.
Ergo, the directors and people running Sinclair misunderstood their mission. To sell airtime to advertisers interested in purveying their products to an audience. Introduce controversy and you hurt the shareholders. A really stupid move from an arrogant corporation.

Then they can sell their stock if they don't like it. How do you explain American Express's politics or GM (DSS Porn) or Hilton (Porn)? with the exception that you agree with what they do. On the other hand what about GM ignoring pollution problems?

It's all the same you can't make a case for one company or the other.

I don't know anything about AMEX's politics or GM and Hilton's porn except for the stolen video posted on the internet. Perhaps it's because those companies make an effort to keep a low profile because they know how it affects their bottom line.

If I buy their stock at 40$ a share, then they decide political kingmaker instead of taking care of business, and my stock drops to 20$ before I can sell it, then its a different question. That is the current complaint of this companies shareholders. I bet they get sued.
