RE: Christopher Reeve Dead at Age 52

Christopher Reeve is dead. His death thrills me. Besides being one of the worst actors of all time, he was a liar and a nitwit. He gave false hope to many with spinal cord injuries. By the time I was 10, I forgot more information on spinal cord injury and paralysis in general, than he obtained during the last few years of his miserable life.

Like it or not, there have been no major breakthroughs or understandings of the spinal column and nerve endings and their regeneration in the last 40 years. None at all.

Christopher Reeve's foundation is total nonsense, with no medical abilities other than exercise. The main goal of his foundation is a fund raising machine and a "how to" for recently disabled folks on how to organize fundraisers to raise money for handicapped additions to their homes and $25,000 wheelchairs.

Wonderful.....

If I could wake him and give him another heart attack, I would.

Maybe if certain people let stem cell research get anywhere, that wouldn't be the case?

It is my reaction to another senseless death caused by politics. We are becoming a totally wacked out society when it comes to morality - we are starting to become downright evil.
You're right this time. Some bigshot trying to show out on a horse he didn't know how to ride and getting thrown had nothing to do with it. What a freaking idiot!![B)]

Using Reeve's death for cheap political purposes is indeed, low. In fact, stem cells offer no hope for spinal chord injuries. Edwards promise of a president Kerry making peole like Reeves walk again is just ridiculous, and pandering of the lowest sort.

Given where we are at with stem cell research, I don't see how anyone can claim that something cannot be done with them. Sounds like a denial that is just as much for political purposes as anything the other side is doing. Theoritically, you could grow another brain from stem cells, never mind a cheesy little spinal chord.

I'm curious -- what qualifies you to dispute the opinion of "a spine specialist at the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute"?

Doctor Weighs In on Spinal Research
Last Update: 10/12/2004 4:07:18 PM

A doctor from the First Coast was able to spend time with recently deceased actor, Christopher Reeve, whose efforts to promote stem cell research continues to stir up controversy.

Dr. Robert Savarese, a spine specialist at the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, met Reeve while doing his residency at New Jersey’s Kessler Institute, one of the world’s leading facilities for rehab. In his time there, he witnessed Reeve making leaps and bounds during therapy, progress almost never before reached by a paraplegic.

“We’ve never heard of a case where one person went from a complete injury to where he was actually having movement below the level of the lesion, says Dr. Savarese. “That is exceedingly rare.

With the amount of attention Reeve received, Dr. Savarese was surprised by his death. And while he was sad that Reeve never saw his dream to walk again fulfilled, he believes there is hope for thousands of others who are paralyzed. This hope, according to Dr. Savarese, lies in stem cell research.

"If spending money you don't have is the height of stupidity, borrowing money to give it away is the height of insanity." -- anon
