Great new music You've bought lately
Just thought I would start a music oriented thread. Have you bought music lately that is not of a genre you usually listen to that turned out to be better than expected? Or have you just bought something on a whim that turned out to be fabulous? Also, if you are an audiophile, what kind of system do you blow your tunes through?
For me, I picked up a CD off the sale rack by the singer Sade (pronounced Chadre for some reason) because a co-worker had raved about her and I was curious. Otherwise, I am usually not interested in what I perceive as lounge-singer music. I was very surprised. The CD "Promises" was simply fabulous. The women has a vocal range that is unusual and extremely affective, and it was the type of music that showcased the capabilities of my stereo system.
The other surprising album I bought was "Big Brother and the Holding Company Live at the Winterland", early, early Joplin stuff. Most of the album sucks, because apparently the dweeb guitarist was the original lead singer for the band and they were just trotting out Joplin as a featured singer of some sort, but the album delivers the most devastating and emotionally wrenching version of "Ball and Chain" that I have ever heard, where Joplin takes the old blues tune and simply gives it a vicious beating. That and a couple of other cuts that feature Joplin make the CD worth having, inspite of the fact you have to remote-out the idiot who can't sing.
For a system I use an old 70's model HK Citation 24 as a pre-amp, and dual power amps, an HK PA-2000 to drive a set of rear Infinity Reference 2000 towers and a front 70's model HK Citation 17 power amp to drive a set of 12" Infintiy Studio Monitors. I've also added an HK AV amp and the usual collection of little satellite speakes for the 5 channel AV sound, and a Yamaha subwoofer. I have both an older 5 CD HK changer and a newer Pioneer 5.1 DVD player that I'm real happy with for the 200$ it cost me. One thing I did that was a little unusal, I took an older HK AVR-25 reciever I had laying around and ran the Sub woofer Channel signal over to it and wired the sub woofer to it,and on the AV amp I am running only the center speaker and satellite speakers on it, redirecting the front and rear AV signals to my power amps. This has the effect of giving me separate control over the sub-woofer and center channel volume and has made a significant improvement over my overall AV sound.
