VP Debate opinion thread
Keep it honest, post your thoughts below. everyone please only post ONCE so it's not obnoxiously long and idiotic to read.
as for me:
I call a draw. I think Cheney is smarter than he's allowed to be in this campaign. I think he's forced to go with the campaign line on more than one issue that he'd rather take elsewhere. He made some good points, and I appreciate that he's got a genuine mastery of the material, whether it's believable or not. He did a good job of being a human- sometimes a challenge for him. I've read a great deal about him of late, and that probably colors my negative general impression of him... but he did well tonight when he wasn't regurgitating the same soundbyte crap that Bush offered on Thurs. I do not appreciate that the Bush campaign continues to insist that modification of positions based on new knowledge is a bad idea. This sort of un-reflective bull-headedness is one of my main problems with the current admin.
Edwards is also smarter than he appeared, I think, and for much the same reasons. I actually prefer Kerry's intellectual foil to Edwards' folksy southern bumpkin act, but I understand it plays well in Paduka. He too often felt as though he needed to answer a prior question before getting to the current one, with the result that he missed answering a couple of things that I'd like to hear. Again, the soundbyte-ing is innane and maddening. He seems weaker to me as a stand-in for president, and that could hurt the Kerry ticket... though who really wants president heart condition cheney? Not I. I noticed that neither guy invoked God's blessing in closing and I must say... THANK GOD!
Cheney could have had a leg up if he'd simply express the obvious truths of miscalculation. Failing to do this is inexcusable. Edwards could have had a leg up if he'd have calmed down a bit and used an economy of succinct language, rather than the pointlessly long responses he sometimes delivered.
all in all- draw. which, I suspect, most will think is a defacto kerry/edwards victory by virtue of no damage done.
