If we have to proclaim a "winner" (didn't know a debate was a competition?) to this debate I'd probably give it to both Bush and Kerry.

...
Yes, debate is a competition, highly competetive at times.

And I think Bush looked quite bad, even relative to his own speeches and new "conferences".

Kerry improved his position in the race with his performance. He looked presidential, and I have to agree with one pundit I read who stated that Kerry turned 200 million worth of negative ads that have been attempting to portray him as a candi-assed flip flopper into shreds. Bush was the one who looked evasive and who looked like he didn't want to be there, worse still he looked like he was pissed off about having to answer some of the questions, an attitude not well recieved by the American people. I think this was a catastrophe for Bush.

How can anybody honestly say that Bush scored a "win" last night. I cringed throughout the entire debate!

Hopefully he can improve upon himself come the next. What a monkey-arse dope![:(]

I was surprised how often Bush said it was a hard job, people working very hard, it's not easy, it's hard, etc etc it almost sounded like he was complaining that his job was too hard for him.

I was surprised (and delighted!) that Kerry did so well.

Here's an interesting article by John Zogby, who I think has the most accurate polls, written right before the debate. He has a different take on the entire election and there is some real food for thought in what he says:

Upon reflection, here's why I think it was an important victory for Kerry. Many Americans are afraid and Bush has used this fear to his advantage. People who are afraid are very reluctant to make any changes. Fear reinforces the incumbent. However, many people, particularly the undecided are very unhappy with Bush's policies. They are tempermentally disinclined to make a change because of their fear, thinking that things may get worse. What Kerry did, is neutralize this. He appeared far more commanding and competent than Bush. Essentially, conveying a message to the undecided, that a vote for me will at least not make things worse. Kerry has overcome a huge obstacle.

GermanStar, I just read on one of my subscription sites that Bush support in Arizona is very soft, especially among Republican women, who tend to be more of the McCain mindset. Zogby is showing a significant shift in that group to Kerry after last night's debate. He thinks Bush might blow it in AZ now. Does that sound like a realistic possibility in that state?

Well, I don't know, but I tend to believe Kerry's people who decided AZ was a lost cause and not to waste any money advertising here. I'm not sure what to make of McCain -- he props Kerry last night, and tours with Bush today. I think he's torn between personal feelings and party allegiance. In any case, there are lots of retirees in the Phoenix area, which dominate the state's population. These old timers are conservative Republicans, and I'm sure Bush will carry here.

I think McCain's behavior can only mean one thing - he plans on running in 2008.

Summing-up, the folks that didn't like Bush reinforced their dislike whilst the folks who didn't like Kerry reinforced their theirs.

Meanwhile, the spineless, whining middle waited until some sort of concensus emerged and then said, "Me too", with resounding authority and conviction. In the next few days as the various campaigns and campaigners mis-use, abuse, amuse each other and us with their reinterpretations of themselves and their opponents, the middlegrounders will slump and vacillate like beached jellyfish, ready to be swayed by the moment's hot topic, some talking dickhead on TV or their morning horoscope.
