Horrendous Loss of Innocent Life in Baghdad

It has become important for our President to portray Iraq as a nation steadily improving to us rubes back home, and as being rebuilt by the wonderful Americans who have come to help them, to the Iraqis, who quit believing it a while ago. Central to this is the publicizing of our "rebuilding" program, which several military people have said is a ridiculous enterprise to be engaged in, in the middle of a war. With the exception of the Bush propaganda machine, it has now become apparent to everyone that both a civil war and a major uprising against US occupiers is in full swing in Iraq. One general said the "rebuilding program" makes about as much sense as painting a house while it is on fire, and it is the first war he had ever seen where the rebuilding happend during the war instead of after it. Today we got a horrible example of this, as the propaganda powers in Iraq tried to make a positive-spin media event out of opening a new sewage treatment plant, complete with flag-waving school children. 35 of these children died in a horrific car bomb attack, and more are dying of their wounds by the hour. Isn't it time we just stop all the spin, all the horseshit, and admit that we blew any chance to rebuild this country with our gross miscalculations and mismanagement of the occupation, and that we admit that we set up conditions to allow a strong well-armed resistance to take root and prosper, and that we are now engaged in a bloody war with these people? Isn't it time to cut the propaganda shows, the political lying to the American people about us "making progress in Iraq", and to get our civilians out of this war zone, and to stop trying to tell the Iraqis that its raining while we piss in their ear ? In other words, how many more people have to get killed for spin?

This is difficult for anyone to understand. The reality of a people willing to murder their own children to drive us out, because they can't physically throw us out, is difficult to actually comprehend. We genuinely think we are there to help, which makes it even more bizzare and incomprehensible. Someday, hopefully soon enough to affect the election, it will sink in that these people do not want to be like us, they would rather kill themselves and their children than be like us. Jim

RE: Horrendous Loss of Innocent Life in Baghdad

The story says the American soldiers rounded up the children, who are out of school this time of year, with candy on the way to the event. Whoever ordered that activity showed some very poor judgement. It is possible the children ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and such a horrendous loss of life was not intended, then again it is just as possible it was intended.

My point here is that setting up propaganda celebrations composed of crowds of people and American soldiers, an idea that must have come from people in command of this insanity, shows a level of denial of the situation that is almost criminal. There is a war going on there, of great intensity being fought by people who have lost tens of thousands of loved ones at our hands and now have nothing to lose. It is time we started acting like this is what the situation is. To organize and publicize this type of event just to get some spin and some propaganda news footage shows the utter incompetance of the people running this war. This is getting worse than Vietnam. Even in that incompetent war no one was stupid enough to do something like this. This would be like holding a children's fair at Khe San.

Again, this just shows the truth of what this soon-to-be-court martialed soldier is saying. We have created a war of insanity led by incompentance on a breathtaking scale:

From our perspective there is no defense for these savages, however, you make a good point that it should be apparent now that staging such a scene would not stop the murder. The problem is, you see it, I see it and others see it, but the people directing the show don't see it. Pattern recognition is a strange process. Before you see it, it is not there to you. After you see it, it is so obvious you are astounded you didn't see it earlier. And, different people have different pattern recognition abilities - artists see things differently than scientists, who see things differntly than chefs. Selecting the right person for the job is the first step in the right direction. It is apparent to anyone looking at that pattern that the Supreme Court got that wrong 4 years ago. Jim

RE: Horrendous Loss of Innocent Life in Baghdad

I am sure the rightwing will spin this as another reason for their war, but things are getting to the point where the insatiable desire of the Bushites for propaganda is now getting a lot of people killed. This whole war is turning into the most heartbreaking unnecessary loss of life in the history of this country, all driven by politics. Not enough troops in the first place, because of politics. Civilian contractors being shipped in like its a European country, because of politics. Staged media events, because of politics. Allies who are their for show and contribute nothing in the way of real military support, because of politics. Allowing the creation of enemy enclaves, because of politics. People are dying because of it - because of stupid asshole right wing politics.

I am praying to whatever powers that be that people recognize this for what it is, and throw out this junta come November, if not sooner.

That is truely tasteless and offensive in all senses of the terms.
