RE: If Elected, What Should Kerry Do About Iraq?

I think Kerry should, as he has promised to do, turn this issue into a UN issue, and I believe the solution to the problem is to find out from the Iraqi people how they want to be governed. The break up of Yugoslavia seems to be a reasonable model. The solution should be an openly debated one, and, since it will be imposed by an external force, we have to be able to accept once we turn it over to the Iraqi people, they will either support it, change it to suit them, or let it fail. In any case, ultimately the Iraqi people will have to fight for their own freedom if they want it. What they pick cannot be expected to be what we would pick. We now owe it to them after destroying their country, to put it back in working order, and then let them be. Jim

Agree with KV, Turkey will pitch a fit but now is the perfect time to do it because they want in the EU. They will be less likely to attack the Kurds with that on the table.

Screw the rest of them. Pull the troops, throw them the keys to Bagdad and tell em to have fun.
you're assuming that Syria, Iran, and a few others there won't have a problem with Kurdistan but i bet you're wrong... let's put troops there and surround them with hostiles... hmm? seems reasonable [8)] partitioning will not work IMHO. i really don't think Kuwait and saudia will feel great about having Iran as an immidiate neighbour..

i don't know about Korea but in Yugoland the soldiers went door to door and disarmed the population. that's what it's gonna take in the mid-east too and good luck with that one...

in political asylum

RE: If Elected, What Should Kerry Do About Iraq?

Kerry may be able to gain back some of our lost moral high ground, alliances and credibility on the world stage, but we’re in an unwinable mess. There’s no definitive head of state or single organization too surrender, so that there will always be hopeless people or groups that will sacrifice themselves for some misguided belief in an eternal glory.
The powers that be have allowed a group of arrogant insipid dweebs to claim leadership of our nation. If the majority of our people reelect them it will show the rest of the world that except for our military might we have no reason to expect any respect in the world community. The nation is ideologically more split over short term self interest and long term survival than it did over Nam or anything that I can remember.
