RE: Mt. St. helens has the hiccups.....

Well, I went googling on my own and came up with this really great web page from the University of Pittsburg:

http://mac01.eps.pitt.edu/harbbook/c_iv/chap04.html

It takes 5 minutes to load on my t1 line, so be patient. Pictures are spectacular, and it has a great graphic showing the underlying tectonics in which Yellowstone's activity belt heads south and west under Idaho and is distinct, but not all that far away from the Cascade belt. Interesting stuff.

For you unfortunate dialup users, here is the graphic. Given the earthquakes today and the rumblings of Mt. St. Helens, if you live in the shaded areas, better check your insurance policies.

I did not that of the cars they showed turned into crispy critters, none of them were Mercedes-Benz. I am assuming after the eruption, the owners simply drove them to Spokane.

Big news on the Sludge report - seems Helen is oozing some lava. Not a good sign.

RE: Mt. St. helens has the hiccups.....

VANCOUVER, Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. Geological Survey issued a volcanic advisory Wednesday for Mount St. Helens with officials warning of a heightened possibility of a small to moderate eruption.

There was no immediate timetable for when an eruption could occur.

Geologists at the Cascades Volcano Observatory said the area could remain under the volcanic advisory for days or even weeks.

"We think there is a heightened possibility that we could see an explosion," said Cynthia Gardner, acting scientist in charge at the observatory. "We are expecting that either nothing could happen or perhaps we could have an explosive event."

"If spending money you don't have is the height of stupidity, borrowing money to give it away is the height of insanity." -- anon
