are you saying that the catholic church doesn't do anything for the down trodden? How about Mother Theresa, ring a bell?
I know that you feel that I am attacking your religion, and in fact, I'll agree that in some ways I am. I don't mean to be disrespectful but to answer your question, yes the church does some good. It has also supported unspeakable evil, as close as my local parish church, by covering up child abuse for 50 years.
Does this upset the Pope? Does he come out and make pronouncements that under NO circumstances will this be tolerated? NO! Instead he alows the US bishops to stonewall and resist implementing all the changes the independent commission recommended. Instead of punishing Cardinal Law he promoted him to an office in the Vatican, which is an utter disgrace.
My point was that it is the height of hypocrisy to criticize other people for not doing enough with THEIR wealth while you sit in your summer palace with access to untold billions.
As to the value of the objects versus their worth in saving lives let me pose a hypothetical question to you. If your own child were dying, and the only way to save him was to destroy the Pieta, how long would you have to think about it?
Again, I know religion is intensely personal but you have to understand that the Church has earned the emnity it now receives.
