RE: Poking Fun of the John Boys
CSPAN has been replaying the debates from the 2000 election lately. My favorite, besides watching Gore's humorous 'lockbox' bit, and the 'walk-over' intimidation attempt... has to go to W.
I couldnt find the transcript, (if someone finds it, please post, as his actual verbage is worse) but here is the essence of what he said in response to a question about Clinton's committment of troops to overseas deployments:
We have to be very careful when deploying troops overseas. I would never send American troops into harm's way without a clear exit strategy. The current administration has not had a clear exit strategy, and that's what you need. (this must be the strategery) Moreover, there has to be a plan to win the peace.
With two deployments to his record, with neither meeting his own standards, what are we to think? Does he believe that he had both an exit strategy AND a plan to win the peace? If this is so, his judgement is proven hopelessly fouled, and he must go. Or, did he simply ignore his own (smart, mind you) theory on deployment in favor of what we've got in afghanistan and iraq? Either way, his record is 100% failure to deliver on what he indicated was the correct way to proceed. (the theory of which is quite reasonable)
He had a good answer, was well prep-ed, but it's all smoke and mirrors. If he'd have meant it, he'd have done it. Or, might he have waffled? [;)]
Incedentally, those whose critique of Kerry is limited to 'waffling' ought to be a bit more thoughtful. Every congressional voting record will appear ridden with inconsistencies when only one line item is displayed as the bill topic. Problem is, often the vote goes a different way due to another version that is floating around, or a slimy special-interest rider ammendment added at the last minute, or to forge a compromise on another piece of more important legislation. Explaning this nuance to the masses should not be the job of any candidate; the masses only listen to soundbytes. However, that does not stop scumbag commercial producers from highlighting things out of context for their own gain. If you're a 'waffle' hater, do yourself a favor before you start spewwing venom... read a little bit about the congressional process.
