E-Voting Machine Stumps Md. Senator

Mikulski Casts Wrong Vote During Demonstration

TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- Maryland's new electronic voting machines are supposed to be accurate and easy to use, but Sen. Barbara Mikulski isn't so sure.

Mikulski was tripped up during a demonstration of the machines Sunday at the Takoma Park Folk Festival. She intended to vote "no" on a sample ballot question but ended up voting "yes."

A spokesman for her re-election campaign said Mikulski apparently brushed against the "yes" button while she was casting a vote elsewhere on the electronic ballot. To cast a "no" vote she would have first had to press "yes" again to clear the checkbox.

Her campaign said her experience shows there are potential problems with the machines.

Mikulski is weighing whether to back federal legislation that would require the machines to provide paper receipts that could be verified by voters after they vote.

I'm not so sure the Senator can even see the screen. She's rather short. [:D]

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant
