RE: Who's fault is it that O.D. was closed at the "shop"?
There was another situation going on there that involved me. It had nothing to do with politics or arguments or flames. I complained to the mods about a very serious situation a few months back, and they handled it very poorly, if at all. Something happened in the situation a week ago that brought it to the attention of the webmaster, and a few things came to a head because of it and the Nambla thing thrown in didn't help. I really can't say much more than that on a public forum, but the end result of it was the MShop people just felt they did not have the resources to properly moderate the forum, and not just for politics and flames, but for all the crazy bastards who show up as well who were sticking around instead of being banned.
If you check the "all posts" feature of the Webmaster's profile at MS, you'll see he has been arguing for and threatening to close it down for years. I think what happens is the mods quit, and then he, a paid employee, gets stuck with the mod work. Like any manager, he only wanted work that directly pertained to the company's businss, and saw the OD as unnneded work. In the end, the guy finally got the reasons he needed to kill it. The only place I suspect politics were involved was in the motivations of the people pushing the webmaster to ban the forum. After exchanging a few PMs with someone over there, I became aware that a lot of the old timers on the Diesel Forum were very upset on what they perceived as a new left wing slant on OD. These people wanted the forum closed down because they did not like some of the newer views being expressed and the fact more people who supported those views were posting them. In the end, I think because it was impossible for them to close it down because of that, they were waiting for an opportunity to do it for any other reason they could find. They could have addressed all the problems, even the serious matter I am alluding to, with proper moderation.
