RE: Your First Car?
47 Chevrolet, 2 door sedan in 1955. My Dad bought it so that I could haul my younger brothers and sisters to school. I was charged with taking care of it and once he caught it with no oil on the dipstick. He kicked my ass, literally, but I never let my cars get low on oil and my kids don't either.
I once drove the car over 2 miles on the starter when we ran out of gas on the way to town. They don't make 'em like they used to. Top speed was about 84 MPH, a measurement I used to make pretty regular.
In shop class, I cut a 1/8" slot in the cast iron header and brazed in a divider plate. Then I brazed on another outlet and had true split dual exhaust. You could never beat the sound of a six cylinder car with duals! I used to back it up to the stone wall at the high school and we would draw a crowd just rapping the pipes off the wall. The shop teacher said the brazing would never hold but I bet I went 30,000 miles 'till we moved and had to sell it.
Jim (thanks for the memories)
