TSA Failures

The Videos thread seems to have degraded into a discussion of strip searching little old ladies on domestic flights. Never had the pleasure of being strip searched but these defenders of the country's borders that we refer to as TSA workers saw fit to isolate me, my wife, two year old son and four year old daughter while they went through my daughter's Barbie suitcase item-by-item. I suppose that my son's Buzz Lightyear backpack posed no significant threat to national security so they let that pass through with no more than a swabbing with the sniffer thingy that tests for explosives. This culminated with our being delayed until a supervisor could be called because I hesitated to remove our children's shoes at the metal detector.

Not that increased security is a bad thing, but inappropriate security is totally ineffective.

RE: TSA Failures

My father's uncle fought for the third reich. I look like him.

My wife's family is Italian but they are nice anyway.

RE: TSA Failures

Oh yeah, my wife's uncle also fought for the same cause.

It's not out of the realm of possibility for a terrorist to not "look" middle eastern, but through the years dating back to the '72 Olympics most terrorists have fit a particular mold. Middle-eastern looking usually between the ages of 17 and 40. I do fit that description, and have no problem complying with any subsequent additional checks.

So far the TSA has not had a drastic failure since 9-11, and even then it was not a "failure." Box cutters were an item allowed on a passenger. I do think that racial profiling should be used as a tool to determine who should be screened additionaly, but not as the only "probable cause" device.

RE: TSA Failures

On another flight (Dec 01) my wife had a pair of full sized scissors in the diaper bag. X-ray missed them as did the subsequent hand search (you may recall that they searched everything back then). When we got to Atlanta for the international segment we complained to the head of security and asked for a written response. Didn't get one.

RE: TSA Failures

I replied this information in another post but I feel it's important enought to include it here:

"Yes, I agree that in and IDEAL world racial profiling is wrong - but we don't live in an ideal world. If I was getting on a plane I would feel a little better knowing that maybe someone evil might be diverted from getting on. Makes me think back to California in 1941. We are at war - yes a different kind but a war never-the-less. And I truly wish we lived in an ideal world - but we have to be realistic. I'm just speaking generally here from a 20K foot view - not wanting to get into specifics.
Some other food for thought: The terrorist are making practice runs. I do not have any concrete evidence but c'mon - use some common sense. Here is a very good (and contraversial) article that everyone on both sides of the fence needs to read:
http://www.womenswallstreet.com/WWS/...&articleid=711
This happened. Period. What's next? The real thing? And make a note of what these "musicians" looked like.
Please don't get me wrong - racial profiling is wrong. I've had some personal experience with it. But if it keeps the skies a little safer... I think an extra 15 minute inconveneince is worth it. The terrorists know that we're debating on racial profiling and use that against us. If they know that they'll probably get searched - maybe they'll think twice about trying to get contraband on-board...
Sorry - got to rambling with my thoughts. FWIW.

James"

And then I added:

"And here's a follow-up article that touches on many of the comments here about racial profiling.

Please read these articles! This is happening!

Here's the follow-up:
http://www.womenswallstreet.com/WWS/...&articleid=716"

This is happening! Everyone needs to be informed!

James
