RE: Look! new BMW 7series update edition
I think what they are trying to do is tone down the current design a bit. The previous redesign of the 7-series by Chris Bangle and his little team, was so over the top it created a very distinct love/hate feeling in the BMW world, and automotive world for that matter too. If you look carefully at the front shots of this design, and then the older 7 series, like 2000-2001, prior to the Bangle redesign, this newer concept bears a stronger resemblance to it.
But to me, this is much uglier than both. When MBW first redesigned the 7 series, I thought it was ugly, just horrible. Now, I think it looks sharper, crisper, more sporty, and I actually like it. Do I like it more than the pre-Bangle 7-series? No. But I think, all those who embrance a little Bavarian automobiling, can't really compare the new 7's to the slightly older models. Look at the generation of 7-series, or the generation of 5-series before the Bangle redesign. That was the pinnicale of the BMW engineering and design. Much like the W126 and the W124 with MB. They were the peak of the best the company could do. Just amazing achievements in automotive build. But the W140 and the new E-Classes and the new 7 series are great cars too, just different. Personally, I think the Bangle designed cars are pretty good looking now. Especially that new 5er. Whoo that's one slick hot rod. Engineering wise, the suspensions and engines are great too. It's the ergnonmics(sp?) that have gone down hill with those cars. I'm sure it'll all settle into place eventually though.
I think that the BMW design teams are on the wrong path with now trying to go back to the more refined look of the older 7. I think the current 7 is an edgy, sporty and attractive car. Sure, it has it's critics, but I think they'd be better off to ride out the storm and continue on the Chris Bangle "flame surfaced" cars than going back to how it was. I think if they stay on the same design path and don't go back to what it was, it'll look very sharp. And who knows, maybe my statement of the pre-Bangle series BMWs was incorrent, and the redesigns that will sprout off the Bangle team in the next 10 years will be even better.
