You're so right . . .
There will always be someone who will trump any kind of objective discussion with all of the usual demonizing, conotative, disinformative catchphrases, like:
"Are you a Nazi?
Is this 1930s Germany all over again?
Are you calling me a "parasite" after I fought my butt off for you in past wars?
I guess you want to shut down the VA hospitals next?
I know what you are: you just want to boil down the poor unfortunates among us into soup.
Hitler shared your desire: you want to get rid the world of the useless, non productive, non conformists and stregthen the economy by eliminating those left behind, the irreliguous, the fringes.
You want to get rid of democracy too. You want to be the dictator, you liberal-hating fascist."
A pocket will never be so deep there won't be plenty who want to pick it, and plenty more to help for a piece of the take. We are only a relative few years away from the next civil war: this time, it will be the young versus the old. Any hope to avoid it rests on the shoulders of the baby boomer generation. However, I think it is impossible for them to grapple with because the debate is too easily soured and the economic, cultural and societal wellsprings--that which is necessary to provide the center and balance to make tough decisions--have been polluted.
I think I could write a parallel Earth novel where the US in a parallel universe withdraws all of their troops from around the world and conspires with aliens to build space ships to take all citizens out of the US to another Earth-like planet where they live happily ever after until someone mentions Social Security and it all starts again.
