RE: Leader of the free world
I wasn't, or didn't mean to imply that the US should have every nation jackboot high-stepping behind our every whim. But it is pretty clear that the US is the most powerful nation in the world, with resources, millitary power and technology unequaled by any other nation.
Maybe the title is inappropriate for the modern day. However, I still contend that world envy and resentment of the US economy and freedoms drives many of the less developed nations toward hatred of the US and to their voicing of their iopinion that the US is the great Satan.
Thew US supports financially and with millitary many nations who openly hate us, because we realize that without out support, much of the population of these countries would suffer unjustly for the actions of their ego-maniacal political leaders.
Now I have many problems with policies of the current US administration, mostly on the domestic front. But as far as the efforts in Iraq, Afganistan, Iran, etc... I will not waver from my support.
As for Saddamm in the 80's, our support of his regime for political purposes was totally wrong. But that support was given for was was viewed as the right thing to do at the time and the make an effort to defeat a greater evil.
We have had wars against Japan, Germany, even England and France. Relationships change over history. So our relationship with Iraq in the 80's has little bearing on why things are the way they are now. IMO.
As far as this thread being off topic,...it's fine with me and the reason why it is moved to the OT forum.
