Contact your dealer soon, some of you people are going to get a campaign and the others must complain to get the updated pads to reduce the brake noises. Seems like they are eliminating some of the brake pads to make this happen. Instead of 4 small pads there are two large pads per caliper.

Butcher,
Thanks for the heads-up on SLR break noise fix! I have a 2006 SLR McClaren with approx. 700 miles on it. All 4 disc’s have numerous hair line cracks which resemble spider webs on them. My service advisor tells me that this is normal and that the terrible squeak will probably disappear at around 1,000 miles when the pads seat in and that I should not do anything until then.
I have a few questions:
Q1. Are the “Spider Web” cracks normal?
Q2. Do you think that the squeak will disappear at 1,000 miles?
Q3. Do you know if the fix actually solves the squeak problem?
Q4. Is the breaking performance the same with the (new) 2 large pads as it was
with (old) 4 small pads set-up?
Q5. Do know what the campaign number is for the squeaky brake problem?

Jim,
As an aside, you might consider purchasing a subscription to Mercedes-Benz STAR TekInfo, which seems to be a little known secret within the Mercedes-Benz community. It's an official site that contains all of the latest service bulletins, and I have the feeling that it would prove invaluable to the continued maintenance of an SLR. If nothing else, some of the publications there might enable you to cut through some of the responses offered by your dealership, and provide you with a sense of what is and isn't considered normal on your SLR.
1. the small cracks in you brakes are normal, i see these on every slr that i have seen.
2. the squeek will not stop at 1000 miles, there is a client with 6000 on his and we just installed the new pads due to ongoing squeek problems
3. i do not know if it really solves the problem since the updated pads just came out, but its worth a try
4. the performance may actually be better because the new single pad design has more contact area than the old 2 pad design
5. dont know the dtb # off the top of my head, i would have to look it up.
by the way, mercedes did not design this car with a concern for brake squeek, the pure purpose of these brakes is to provide the best possible braking performance regardless of noise. do not be surprised if the aggressive pad material makes noise for as long as you own it.
