I have been looking for a diesel SUV for quite some time. I looked at the Q7 and R320 before getting an ML320. I liked the R but availabilty was scarce for the remaining 09's in diesel version. The deep discounting of the year end models was the real motivator in making my decision.
I voted prestige but I really wish I could have selected every criteria. When I bought my C280 I did the research and there was just no other car in its price range that could match its quality, reliability and design. Its my first Benz and the best car i've ever owned, for one its not a money pit and im not dumping every pay check into it for repairs. I defiantely consider it an ELITE amongst other vehicles on the road.

I was still adolescent, the R129 was just presented to the public. It made me dream.
20 years later, I was able to purchase one, used of course.
That would be my first Merc, maybe not the last.
Several reasons.... reliability, safety(wife and newborn), performance.
I had Jaguars, Lincolns, BMW's, Lexus... I'm just sick of their build quality. Sure some Mercs have minor glitches, but once they are fixed... the car runs for 200,000 miles.
Like most polls, this one is not really valid. It offers you only one response and few people have only one reason for purchasing anything. It would be better to not have a list of answers, but let each person enter his/her reasons. Or be able to select all reasons, but poll does not have some of the ones I used.
For me, prestige is probably most important differention to select an M-B, but the improvement in reliability of the E class over the past couple of years, the quietness of the car and the comfort of the luxury version are almost as important. Without the other two, I would not have purchased the car.
You can also add in the exterior and interior styling and features of the 2010 model as deciding factors. I turned down a really good deal on a 2009 because I did not like styling and features were not up to this car's class.
BTW, I could have gotten a fully loaded, top of the line Genesis V-6 for $36,000 but turned it down. Very nicely equipped car at a very low price and M-B could learn a few things from them re: features, but in final analysis it is still a Hyundai and has not proven itself yet.
Sure some Mercs have minor glitches, but once they are fixed... the car runs for 200,000 miles.
and MORE!

**would you buy a Benz with 30K miles that hasn't been takin cared for very well? or a Benz that has 150k Miles thats bein takin cared for?? Do not just look at a lower mileage Benz, inspect the higher mileage ones aswell, you might just be suprised!
After a long time of being an air cooled VW fan, I have really come to appreciate German automotive history. But it was time to step up.
A good friend of mine had a 1976 280SLC that was owned by his MIL and never being used.
Now that I own it and have driven it, I'm hooked. I grew up in a family of Camaro and other American muscle fans. I'm looking right now to dump my remaining American iron and get an 80's Benz wagon for my wife.
This particular car is fairly unique in that it's a 280SLC, which wasn't sold in America. It has the Euro bumpers and a few other unique quirks (some cloth interior, real "parking" lights, no A/C, etc, etc).
It started right up after not being started for 11 months, and sitting for a couple of years.
