I've known what a Mercedes Benz was since I was 4 years old, and have wanted one since then. I'm an engineer - I find good design to be pleasing on all levels. I guess I am a bit of a Teutonic snob - I just find German design, engineering and culture fascinating.

A good friend of the family had a W126 380SE, traded it for a Jag XJ6, which then got traded for a W124 300E, which got traded for a W140 300SE, and finally a W220 S550. Whenever he was around, he would toss me the keys and I would spend hours looking over the car in awe. The W140 was the last one I really did this with, as it was the last before I started driving - but they all just fueled the fire.

In 2006, I moved to Washington DC shortly after graduating college, and after a few months out here I found a pristine W202 C230 for sale at a MB dealer and tried to buy it. At that time, I didn't really have a pot to piss in and had to walk away after realizing I couldn't make the payments, let alone save anything or cover it in case the car needed repairs.

Fast forward a year, and smart was starting their sales rap in the US, and I put the $99 down. I have been a smart fan since I saw the initial engineering drawings and I knew I could swing the payments on it. As luck would have it, my career took off and I paid the car off in 2 years flat.

I turned 29 in September, my Saturn VUE was falling apart literally - and while I love the smart, I wanted something that didn't have to exert itself to keep up in traffic. After a lot of serious thought and number crunching - I realized that I could easily afford exactly what I wanted - so I sold the VUE to carmax, got out my checkbook and went and ordered it.

It took me 25 years, but in 3 months I will own my first Mercedes Benz (but not the last). Waiting these last 3 months seem harder than those past 25 years.

I was looking for a big bus with lots of power, growls like a big cat and drank veg oil. It was a balance between the slightly better looking BMW E39 525 TDS estate and the more powerful S210 rustbucket. The rustbucket won!

I purchased my 2002 CLK320 because I felt I could settle down with this one car and keep it forever, although, it had 110,000 miles on it everything was working and the outside was in good condition. I have had shocks, brakes, exhaust, ac fan motors replaced on it. I presently have a power seat problem, but this doesn't discourage me from keeping it forever. I love it.

I couldn't bear the thought of a mini-van. The R may not be the prettiest, but it's so much better than the other mini-vans.

The first Benz was for value, a 1991 190E for $2k off of Ebay. The second was as well, $4250 for a 1998 E320 with 80k miles... great deal. Since then it's been for comfort and safety, seeing as I totaled the E320 going about 70mph... and walked away feeling less beat up than I do on most roller-coasters!

We purchased a 1997 E320, I used to be in the trade when I was a kid. I since retired and needed a hobby project still have most of my snap-0n tools. I found this vintage is ez to work on with the exception of having to buy some special tools.(so what else is new) having a lot of fun getting the car back in shape.

First Benz was sumer 2009. Was looking for a "rational" second car. But 3 year old civics or Mazda3s were like 10-12K. Saw a 6 speed manual C240 on the honda used car lot for $16 and that made me start to look.. Got a 2005 C240 with factory waranty for $15.5K! that was a great deal and no brainer...

So back to the future, we needed to plan a replacement for our 9 year old Odyssey. New semi equipped minivans are running $35K and up. I picked up a loaded 2008 R320CDI CPO with extended warranty for about the same price.... again a no brainer. That why I answered the poll with "value"... I now just laugh at owners who purchased an Odyssey touring for $50K.
Just keeping my fingers crossed regarding reliablity.. the oddy has been almost bulletproof for all these years.

I literallly JUST bought my 86 300E

Last Tuesday.
I previously had a 97 Chrysler Sebring last owned by a friend, and this year the transmission failed at 116k miles. I drove 4k miles with only 1st and 2nd gears...

Forunately for me, CA has a vehicle retirement program that provided a good portion of the funding for a replacement, supplemented by a very generous Christmas bonus, and I knew that my budget would not support something 'new'...

I also knew that the 300E, even with 128k already on it, was roughly equivalent to 90k on the Sebring, and would age far better!

Even with the problems associated with neglect, it is proving me correct.
I fully expect it to live a very long time.

Long story short, LONGEVITY is the reason I chose it. Well, at least the main thing...
