Mercedes is no better nor worse than any other car manufacturer. All brands have ups and downs. In case you didn't notice, a lot of the posts on this site are about MB problems.

I like the MB because it's very solid and safe. Has 'purpose' (as I recall one auto critic saying). It's fairly easy to work on for the DIY fans. The paint on our '98 C230 looks like it did 13 years ago when it rolled out of the showroom.

For very different reasons, also love my '94 Ford Probe GT. It's gonna be around for quite a while. But with the C230 and GT getting on, it was time to get a newer car again. There is no next gen Probe (Ford really dropped the ball on that one) and the MB C300 is smack down a great, great car!!! Picked up a certified 2008 C300 at a very good price, so now have two MB's in the family.

Also VERY happy with the service at our local MB dealer. All part of the MB ownership experience, eh?

I bought mine for the new MB smell that still lingered after 20 years.

Love one of em, despise the other.
One has been bulletproof through all the hard driving antics I've put it through for over 12 years and 100k miles (now @ 175k). It just keeps ticking
The 1991, 190E

The other has been a straight up lemon, has had rust issues, spring perches rotting out, and panels popping everywhere. It is totally untrustworthy and the head gasket leaks.
It has cost me more in 3 years of ownership (even with parking it most times over the winter and some in the summer) than the first one cost me in the entire 12 yrs.
It now has 150k miles, and I bought it with 120k.
The 1996, E-320

For sure I will think long and hard before ever buying another Benz, unless older when QC was good. It went to hell after 1995.
A Ford will outlast the E-320, and cost less.

engineering appeal

When i bought my first MB in 1967, I was a newly minted engineer and the cars were being advertised for their engineering features. I bought a diesel (a 1965 190Dc) because diesel fuel was then half the price of gasoline (about 25 cents versus 50 cents, i kid you not) and you could not then find a large comfortable sedan that got 30 mpg on gas. The safety, durability, economy, and "unusualness" all appealed to me. Somehow I did not mind that the fuel stank and was hard to find, or that the car took close to a minute to reach 60 mph (it only had 65 HP, about the same power-to-weight ratio as a VW Beetle of that era). Somehow we tolerated the manual windows, lack of seat adjustments, lack of power steering, and lack of AC (despite living then in Washinghton DC!). It did not have any radio, either.
i got so excited when our next Benz diesel (the 1971 220D) actually had reclining seats, a radio, and power steering! And a few more horses.
We always felt safe in the Benzes, and enjoyed the idea of driving an economical car. In the beginning, i even believed the company's claims that the diesel polluted less than a gas car (and for some pollutants, that was true, but not for all).
Eventually, of course, we learned that the cars of the 1960s and 1970s rusted easily and early, that Diesel fuel could be a pain to get, and that repairs could be very costly.
Then of course trhe fuel crises of 1973 and 1979 gave us (briefly) a feeling of superiority, because we coud get fuel for our car any day of the week -- no waiting in lines or watching for the correct flag for us.
After that, the diesel cars got better (quieter, more powerful, better equipped) but the price of diesel began to reach or exceed the cost of gas. From then on, i stuck with Benzes out of a mixture of habit, some sort of loyalty to the marque, and because owning one had become a hobby (I was an am active in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America).

It was everything I expected and much, much more. Im hooked!! I bought my mercedes because of its handling, safety, style, design, quality, and eliteness.

I'm on my fourth Benz. First was a 380SE, than a 400E, my favorite a Clk 55 AMG, everyday driver, and a SL500, nice weather top down cruiser. The 380 was a friends who's wife didn't like the car, he sold it to me with 20k on it and I was so impressed I've never wanted to drive any other brand. Almost bought a Maserati a few years back, but trans problems scared me away.

Have always loved big luxury sedans and have always had a particular fondness for w220 S classes, so i saved a few dollars and bought myself a 2000 S320 for my 21st.

I bought my first MB (1982 300D) in hopes of running it on WVO. I remembered reading an article years ago about a guy running his diesel VW on used cooking oil, it always intriged me. With the help of this and other forums I got the car cleaned up and running fine (on diesel) When I started looking into WVO conversions and filtering / treating the oil,
