Due to the many problems I hear of in the repair forums.
In the W-210 forum, they are crapping out on a regular basis (as an example)
Yes the newer ones are quicker shifting but are also (as it appears) quite sensitive.
I think the switchover cost, even if a direct bolt up (which I somehow doubt) is not going to be a inexpensive conversion, or more dependable. On Benz's this conversion sounds like it could be a whole lot of headaches.
These are not Chevys or Fords, where parts support is massive and plentiful and reasonably priced when doing conversions You'll eat up your mileage savings in conversion costs.
Sorry to hear of your problems, but research closely. You may not need a rebuild.
It may just need some minor work...Careful with the Stealerships.
Also, the added gear may give a few more mpg, but then again much is dependent on the final gearing anyways, and the change might only get a minimal mileage effect in local driving. Not so , on flat out freeway.
