I like knowing that I'm driving a car capable of driving fast if need be. A car built by german hands, a car that hasn't been thrown together by a bunch of incompetent fools like asian marques. German engineering is first and foremost and anyone who has a speck of class, intelligence, and precision would agree.

My First Mecedes

A colleague leased a new 1989 300E. I was sold after the first ride...blasting through the L.A. freeways. Amazing how solid the car was at any speed. Comfortable, powerful, nimble, and good looking.
I purchased a 1989 300E in the spring of 1991. Absolutely the best vehicle I have ever owned. I drove this car for 200K miles over 19 years, and regretably sold it last month. I am suffering from separation anxiety...I loved that car! I did all the service and knew every nut and bolt, kept detailed records of everything...even gas mileage. This car was part of my persona!
I appreciated the engineering and quality of this vehicle. This car is meant to be driven, and I'm sure it will provide reliable service for another 20 years if properly maintained.
Now I own a 2006 E350, which is a totally new experience. I am slowly warming up to this vehicle. Lots of plastic, and it feels very "delicate" compared to the "tank-like" '89 300E. Time will tell if MB still builds cars that will last for 200K+ miles.

I voted other.

Simply because I wanted a reliable nice car for change. And compared to what I was using before for daily transportation, it certainly is. Despite it's quirks.

I voted value, not in terms of resale value, but in overall what you are getting when you purchase a MB. Mercedes should however focus on resale value though. Why? I would be hesitant to buy a new Mercedes just to know from a scaled perspective that a Toyota has a better resale value. People might look at a new purchase as a wise investment if they knew that it had a good resale value.
I live in the middle of a large farming community, all of my classmates that I graduated HS with (10 yrs ago) all wanted "American" car/truck brands. I say "American" in quotes because its such a FARSE! The new Buick is an OPEL!! Smaller chevy trucks are really ISUZU's! Smaller GM compacts were really Geo's/Isuzu's. I really have a problem with that re-branding/re-badging thing. What I like about Mercedes is the Quality. Are the new Mercedes comparable to the older ones?? No. Old world Mercedes Benz is still in a different league, but then again so is 98% of the cars on the road. Even older U.S. cars <1970's were built better than most of the newer generations. Mercedes used to boast how long their cars lasted..Remember the reward/medallions that you used to see on the grills for accomplishing so many miles>They need to bring that back! I drew a picture when I was around 7 or 8 of my garage with a BMW, a Volvo, and a Mercedes inside. Now looking at that drawing it was an E30 BMW and a W123 MB, but the fact still remains, where did I get that wanting? My parents never drove any of those cars (until now).
I dont drive a MB for the name (although it is nice) but the three pointed star is not my selling point, to some it might be and for those people you are buying the car for the wrong reasons, so go buy a Lexus instead, or some other re-badged car. I like the feeling of driving a tank, without driving a truck or "boat" car and still getting great performance and handling. To me the cars are just smart, in that the designs seem to make sense, most of the time. That is how I define quality, with consistency, smart design, ease of use, ease of maintenance, quality parts, quality build, timeless looks, ride quality, and handling. With BMW I found most of those key features, but Mercedes for the most part was still in another bracket, while VW only fulfills some of those qualities I look for.

"Continually Convincing Central Maryland that W123's are not slow.."

Awesome post, I get so sick of reading how people bought these cares for the prestige, bla bla bla. The showoffs give the rest of us a bad name as though every MB owner is an uppity snob. Reading this took me back to why I wanted a Benz. I can truly relate to every reason you've listed here and say that I feel the same way, down to my fascination with them as a child.

Listen guys and gals, these are nice cars, these are beautiful cars, they are luxurious, classy, powerful, suave, blah, blah, blah and I like them, I really, really like them. I bought my first one early this year and then bought 2 more. But lets be honest...reliable?!, well engineered!!?? Some people here even have the nerve to dump on Asian built vehicles! My 86 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ61, my 76 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, my wife's old Toyota Corolla, my 69 Ford F250 are all far more reliable and in a lot of ways better engineered than my 560 SEL. I don't mean to rattle any one's cage here but it's a car, designed and built by humans, it's got a lot of good points, a lot of great points, but it's a frickin car! Thank god the person that started this poll didn't put reliability as one of the selling points! I'm used to getting 300,000km out of a well built gasoline drivetrain, I'll be lucky to get half that out of my 560. Timing chains fail at 100,000, tranny's at 200,000, idling problems, no start problems, sls issues and the list goes on. Just like it does for a lot of vehicles out there.

And somebody should look up the definition of prestige. I love the "honour and esteem bestowed on me, by others, for my impeccable taste and discerning habits. Whether I'm shooting my SIG or my Browning, 4 wheeling in one of my Land Cruisers, escorting my wife on my arm or picking up a client that earns more in a day than I do in a year, I love the looks and nods of approval I get when I soire with the best. Prestige has nothing to do with being snobby, uppity or a show off. It's about about appreciating quality and I dare anyone on this site to say they don't appreciate the nods of approval they get when they pull up in their S Class Mercedes.

FLAK SUIT IS ON!
