Maybe you are a dumbass too and did not do a pre-purchase inspection? Maybe you didn't do your homework in advance as to what to look out for? You have 2 ancient cars. What did you expect?

All of my MBs have been great and ALL have been less trouble and out lasted the shit America car companies put out in the corresponding years and continue to do so.

How many 1980's American cars do you see on the road?

Do spring perches (due to poor caulking and too thin ga. metal) , body rust (due to waterbased paints), head gasket leaks (which can come at any time), and tranny failures mean anything ?
The only thing a pre-inspect would have saved me is the spring perches, which are hidden under undercoat anyways, before they detonate. I do my own pre-inspect, and have for decades.
The Benz's from the 80's and first few years of the 90's were fine cars, and then the quality has taken a nosedive.

Oh, and there are MANY 80s american cars running which never even had good upkeep.
Benz owners are fanatic on upkeep, but they are still failing. Problem is, when you have a Benz, you have too much invested to just haul the thing away on a hook to the car crusher, so you end up dumping money in em.

Yes Benz went down the toilet from the late 90s to the mid 2000s. And they suffered too. They are coming back to what they used to be. Cutting costs never pays in the short-term nor the long-term. Unfortunately Mercedes had to learn the lesson the hard way. I will be a lifelong MB owner I think. I will just know which years to avoid for the next 3-4 years, but even that won't matter in a fews years (after I finish my medical residency training) as I will have the latest certified pre-owned model.

Just put my E-320 up for sale.
I no sooner got the (2nd) coil replaced, and I started it up, and now the SRS light is flashing, and the drivers window finally crapped out.
This was supposed to be the car that replaced my 190E, but it just cannot be trusted.
The 190E is a totally different car from a quality standpoint has been flawless. It's not near the car the E320 is from many standpoints, but quality? It went to hell after that 190E body change. Problem is, the car is 18 yrs old, and finally some rust has barely started, and it has so many miles I won't trust it on a long trip.

If you want to believe the quality has returned, go for it. I work on these things, and don't see any certain improvement, and for the cost of these cars, they should be bulletproof. They are far from it.

These will be my last 2 Benzs unless I buy one as a collectible. For a daily driver?....fagedaboutit.

(Oh, and my 91 Mustang GT has been bulletproof, fast and dependable since the day I've owned it....For all the abuse I have put it through, it should have blown up years back, and it has NO issues....NONE ! I run the Piss out of it on a regular basis, and it has cost me virtually NOTHING!)

I thought this thread was for posting reasons why people have purchased a MB? I guess if one is really angry however, they can justify crapping on peoples excitement 'here' in this thread in any case.

Problems with your MB? Post it up in the appropriate threads so when people do a "search", your observations can be utilized constructively, in a way to inform and help support other owners and potential owners. I own 2002 slk320 and researched all the issues with the car here before I purchased it and decided to buy it any way. With all the technical help this site offers, I decided that I wanted to buy it for all the reasons people generally do, safety, looks, performance, prestige and yes quality. These are complexly engineered cars. I consider myself advanced in DYI maintainence and repair, so with all access to information here, I went for it and made the purchase. I think if one doesn't have that DYI confidence, think twice, however a truck load cash will always suffice as a better substitute then fiddling with PSE's and fluid evacuators.

Those old adages generally hold true, 'you get what you pay for' and/or 'you get out of it what you put into it'....do your homework and don't get burned.

Oh! that's right...You "work on these things" so you know better because you are a professional right? and puraardchased two? YES you are a 'slow learner'

I love my MB. Best car I have ever owned, never had to bring it to the guy who 'works on these things'. Good luck aard

Why I chose MB

I chose to buy my first MB...a 2008 E320 CDI because after exhaustive research and the value in buying a Certified Pre Owned felt it was the best investment...quality, fuel efficiency, safety, ride etc. After seeing my neighbor survive a head on collision where both cars were traveling about 65mph, I was sold. I have been extremely happy with my first MB with no problems after 1.5yrs. After our Honda Odyssey was totaled this past July 4th, I increased my research on the R320 CDI. Just made an offer on a 2008 yesterday...loaded to the hilt. Very excited.

The Honda..., I was glad to see it go. As far as I'm concerned, it was a lemon. Blown transmission at 78K. Paint peeling off around rear windows and doors and after they repainted, it continued peeling. Trim pieces missing when delivered brand new. DVD crapped out after 1.5 yrs. Rear main seal blew after transmission changed. Rear windows stopped working. Right roof rack came apart while driving. Replaced the rear door struts twice. Rear A/C control stopped working at 85K. Power steering failed two years after purchase. These are just off the top of my head.

As far as the nose dive in quality of MB, I blame the merge with Chrysler! While they were in bed with them, Consumer Reports hardly ever recommended them. Soon after the divorce, they now have 5 Recommended Buys. Interesting.

American Made? I think its hit or miss. I grew up with a father who was a Chevy Man all his life and we were always working on them. (He was a certified master mechanic on the side) I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that runs like a champ. 197K on it. Only had to replace the radiator, water pump and oil pressure sensor. Not bad. I truly believe if you take great care of any car, it will last forever.

For me, it will be MB from here on out.

Honda went through a very dark period in the early 00's. The built some real junk. Look at Accord coupes from that time and you will see many with emblems and paint falling off. Bad tranny, etc. My neighbor has the van with the auto close doors. The hinges have caused dents FROM THE INSIDE. My MIL had one of those Del Sol things. Zippy car but a rattle trap and the interior was just garbage, only the seats were good.

I think Honda just got a bit arrogant at that time but an Odyssey is not a cheap van so I'd expect it to be above all those problems.

Cheers
