Exclamation Missing The Point

Prestige is the last reason to buy a Mercedes .

Who gives a crap what anyone else thinks about how you do things ?

They're well built , reliable and safe automobiles that also handle quite well if you know how to drive .

They've extremely inexpensive to operate and maintain too .

As the older Mercedes commercial said : ' all automobiles fall apart eventually , ours just do it later on ' .

Agree. I find em used. Both in a used car dealership, and prestige is for the high minded.
I just want a bulletproof car. The newer ones seem to not be meeting that requirement (as I read up) but I do most of my work so ...you are right, they are basically inexpensive to drive. If ya have em worked on, you'll go broke.

Safety? Pretty good, but the Volvo's always had that reputation .

No, they are just good long runners, if cared for. And I do like the E-320 for hi speed and handling (especially after I lowered it). Comfort on a long run is good as well.

I favor "It's not what you pay, it's what you get" I find this to be true of the brand and I agree used is the way to go. I really think a used Mercedes offers tremendous value. The only drawback I've come upon is the player haters. My neighbors giving me dirty looks or "oh that will cost a fortune to fix". Newsflash to many of them. I already thought I was better than them when I drove an '87 beater Accord and my Mercedes doesn't really cost that much more than others to fix. Sites like Benzworld help see to that.

Cheers

Post Mercedes Safety

Volvo has a reputation for safety yes but I'm in the junkyard a lot so I get to see how Mercedes fare in serious accidents , they're much better than most realize .

The passenger compartment stays intact even in side hits and I'm talking about all Mercedes , not just the new ones with air bags .

Yes , the 124's really sucked when they came out as Diamler-Benz was trying to compete with the then new Lexus etc. competition so they ran the factory flat out to crank out as many units as possible and the quality went right in the tank .

Ford did this in 1949 too and the few remaining ones were the best of the bunch , just like the remaining late 80's & early 90's Mercedes are now .

Yeah, my 96 is not good from a quality standpoint.
Many shortcuts and issues. I probably won't buy a newer one.
Now my 91 is rust free and I've beat the crap outa her. She comes back for more without a complaint or whimper. 175k mi. and good for another 100k mi. My 96 may make it that far, but not cheaply.
I think they have fallen in quality, but gotten better in other respects.
All in all, still good cars, but not what they were.

I just bought my fourth Mercedes. That should tell you something right there. My newest is a 2000 E320 driven by a "senior" who only put 34,000 miles on it! It's a gem, kept garaged and just another wonderfully built automobile by Mercedes. I have kept my third Mercedes, a 1987 190E which has 235,000 and runs like a champ! You can't go wrong buying a quality made vehicle like Mercedes. I will own nothing else!

Not to discourage you, but wait and see how dependable the E-320 is in time.
I own both of the cars you have. The 190E is superior on a dependability level.

Leaping tall buildings in a single bound

After watching that excremental eye-candy movie 2012, I told my kids I wanted a car that could jump across flaming lava gorges and survive molten bolide strikes. I showed them the famed 5th wheel youtube videos,
then they gave me the go-ahead.

Plus it had to have decent legroom.

Test

The Benz is a simplistic three-pointed star that represents its domination of the land, the sea, and the air.

"You can't fix stupid!"
