Superior German Engineering and BMW used in the same sentence.............that's quite a novel concept.

To any real Merc Lover we recognise that, in the words of Queen, a BMW is "oh yes, I'm the great pretender"

I've travelled quite a bit this week with my job and I kid you not, I've seen a 3yr old (06 plate) Beemer on the back of a recovery truck on the M25 Motorway and yesterday in Putney South London, a 2 YEAR OLD BEEMER (57 plate) by the side of the road with a very disgruntled looking owner staring at the engine with his bonnet up.

Gliding slowly past in my 1979 W123, did I laugh? Of course not.

Unfortunately there are car owners that have no clue how to maintain one, so they drive it into the ground.

With that said I have owned and maintained both BMW and Mercs and the BMWs parts are easier to find also performance upgrades vs the Merc. I like both cars but if I was to recommend to a friend that was on a budget and wanted to buy either the BMW would be the preference.

I'm sure BMW owners would be delighted to hear that news.

Perhaps you should post it on a BMW forum where someone may be interested. To a Merc Enthusiast it's all just a bit yawn yawn to be honest!

Yawn.
If I wanted a BMW, parts would be more available. They break down more, and the aftermarket market is up to the task. BMW's are known to be a little tempremental, and somewhat harder to wrench on as well. They do have their good points. Their motorcycles being one point.

Oh by the way, re: owners driving their cars into the ground.

What maintenance is required by the owner on a 2 & 3 yo BMW !!

At the upper end of the market, I have to laugh how wonderful BMW have done this season (and the past 5)........compared to the Mercedes Brawn team that have torn apart the entire field.....including Ferrarri.

As we say in England, BMW is an abbreviation for 3 words......Built Mainly 4 W**kers!

Years and models vary so that's left open for interpretation. Not sure if quality differs from the UK and the US. I'm only judging by personal experience, wrenching, driving, and finding parts.

Of course, I can't testify for the newer models since they are out of my price range.

Remarkably I've unfortunately run across a few people that don't keep up on typical recommended schedule maintenance. So that may explain why newer models break down on the road.

Like I said before I like both BMW and Merc, but still open to other models types such as Audi, Porsche and VW. Though I also like some Jeep and Subaru models. But I'm used to wrenching on cars and learning from those experiences because I usually drive them hard or to their maximum capabilities .

My first MB is my current car I just bought, a 2006 C55 AMG. I bought this car for several reasons. The hand built by one man AMG engine was a big one, the overall quality of a Mercedes Benz was another. With the economy the way it is I bought a TON of a car for the same price as a brand new plain old sedan. I originally wanted a performance V8 car and considered a 2006-2007 CTS-V Cadillac but couldn't get past all the angles and plastic interior, considered a 2002-2003 M5 BMW but they are all miled out and now a 8 year old car, and lastly while not a V8 a 2000-2003 911 Porsche. This was the biggest disappointment of my journey. The water cooled cars from 1999-2008 are junk. They can grenade with no notice and Porsche has never really addressed the problem. Just look at used ones in the year range and see how many say "New crate engine for $13k". The problem is the crate motor is no better or improved from the one that just went BOOM. I then drove a 2007 C230 and it was a very nice car, I just really wanted a strong V8 motor. I started searching for a C55 and I couldn't be happier.

Very informative, thank you.

Do you have any photos of the interior or the options it came with, GPS display, transmission controls, etc...?

It's interesting to see the latest technologies incorporated into automobiles ans how they suffer or compliment the ergonomics
