Really loved the looks of my Mercedes-benz... Wasn't too fond of the rear until it grew on me. Performance was an advantage too. Loved the fact that it's a supercharged engine.

14 Benzes, and engineering execution is my reason. Performance is adequate, others may be faster, but not for long. Also the handling, but others may do it better, but not for so long as well. That goes back to statement #1. I would add that the visceral beauty and pure function of just looking into the engine compartment and seeing both quality and logic in one place. without a compromise of one over the other. Balance.

Why an MB ?
Favourite car: the 1928 Petersen Bentley.
After favourable reviews from me mates (various W124 cars, "Sprinter" vans and trucks) thought i'd try a 1992 W124.
Prefer older Mercedes to BMW as when i lived in Germany in 1990, Mercedes were driven by farmers, BMW were driven by NAZI's.
Mercedes (until 1995) were designed and built by engineers - build it as well as you can, bollocks to the expense. Ok, they're not "pretty" but they work well, are easy to work on and will last.
After 1995, Mercedes were built by accountants - build as cheaply as possible, make it look good to sell many "units".
Well, years ago I said I wanted to buy an oldtimer. At that time one of my favourites was a year60 Mustang or so, but they are now way too expensive (for me at least). At that time I found the year70's not that good looking, but I begin to like them more.
When friends of mine bought a Mercedes 200D from 1966 (Heckflosse) the oldtimervirus came back again and I bought a 67 VW Beetle. Lot of fun with it, but not really suitable for long distances with my whole family including luggage, and also not really winterproof. Then I went looking around for the W123-series, as my friend also got a 83 300D. And when looking around my father accidently found the one I now have (77 220D).
I guess that 1,5 year ago I wouldn't have imagined ever buying a Mercedes. Now completely fond of the car. Drives very well, and you don't get the feeling driving a car over 30 years of age. It drives as well as our 04 Renault. ;-)
Also the kids like the car, and they said they want to go on summervacation with the Mercedes. Hopefully it won't be too hot, as an AC is missing, but what the heck: at the age my kids have, my parents didn't also have an AC in their car and we were always going on holiday by car. ;-)
