I found my 1977 280SL at a Jaguar dealer. They had taken it in as a trade-in. I knew the Salesmanager and he just wanted to wholesale the car. It was in great condition with service records for $4k. It had a minor cold running problem. I replaced the "cold start valve, the thermastat and the plugs" and now she's great. I also discovered a cracked sub-frame and replaced that plus all front end bushings. I have less than $6k in the car and a great summer fun car. I'm a BMW old Series 6 tech so I know old German cars and how to maintain them.
I grew up in a Cadillac family. My folks used to buy a new Fleetwood and an Eldorado every 3 years but in 1983 they bought 2 matching 300SD Turbo Diesels. When they traded them in 2000 for 2 S500's, one of the 300s had 397K and had never left failed to start. We used to joke that the only way to kill those cars was to take them in the yard and shoot them! I fell in love with MB as well and my first one was a new '86 190E 16v. Since then, I've bought 3 Benzes and currently have a '97 C230 Sport and an '02 E430.

I bought my Benz because I was tire of all the other cars I owned not being worth anything. Had to work on them all the time. Had experience with Benz in service and really wanted one then. Bought my first one in 1990 a 1977 SL. Sold it in 2001 with 23500 miles on it to make room for a new car. Bought an E430 . Its the best car I have ever owned. So, I bought a 99 SLK230 just the other day. Has 58000 miles on it and is like new. I intend to be buried in it. Will never own another make of car other than BENZ!
I've only had my 2000 SL500 for about six weeks so far, but I love it. I've been a fan of the SL since I was a kid. I moved to Texas from Ohio for the weather last year, and I wanted a convertible. I'm taller and I wanted something comfortable because my commute is 35 miles each way across San Antonio. I wanted good power, good fuel economy, but above all I wanted something safe. I've driven well over a million miles, mostly in old pieces of junk. I've seen a lot of accidents but haven't been in one, so sooner or later my luck may run out. My cousin had a 300SDL that got hit when it was parked by a large SUV doing about 45. The trunk was pushed in almost to the back window, but the window didn't even crack. I started looking at other MBs that had been crashed and I was impressed.
The new diesels are having problems with starting in temperatures of 10 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. MB claims it is due to fuel gelling and offers no remedy since no fuel additive to prevent gelling has been approved. I am one really teed-off 2007 R320 CDI owner that has posted my tale of woe in the W251 R-class forum.....
