I purchased my 1994 S350 for a couple of reasons. 1st it was not performance as this is one of the slowest cars I have ever owned. I would say with the high price of gas these days I wanted to drive a larger luxury car with good gas mileage. This is it. Also Safety was another concern.

Gas Mileage and Safety would be my major 2 concerns/ The Luxury is a bonus.

As far as performance my other car is a Jaguar S-Type R with 400HP with a Eaton Supercharged 4.2 V8 32 Valve Motor. So I have a prerformance car as well.

Reasoning for purchasing my 2007 CLK:

Comfort
Quality of Drivetrain and suspension

I previously owned Acura, Nissan and Toyotas.

We grew up on 180D, 190D, 200S and was convinced that MB is not only confortable cars but reliable. The design, engineering, styling and quality are great. I can't compare it to any domestic cars then and now.

My Modest MB W202 C230 1997

Mission Impossible?
I've driven all kinds of cars AMC(Ambassedor), VW (2xRabbit,2xJetta) Pontiac(Parisienne), Ford (LTD,Mark VII,Festiva) Acura (1.6EL), Toyota(Camry LS, Avlaon XLS), Hyundai (Elantra). For 30 years if I take stock in how I buy a car. I always bought a car for less than 15,000$ USD, and accounted for depreciation, and paid cash. In other words I pay as I go. If something broke fix it, if not keep the money. Not pretty but it works for me.

Spring 2008. My goal was to buy a car for less than 10,000$ USD with low mileage, and service history.

Mission Accomplished!
34,000 mile one owner full service MB. What a wonderfull car. You can't beat the value.
Now I have a problem. Once you get into an MB you can never get out!
Poor me

Post What else would I drive?

After 15 years as an auto mechanic I ended up working at MB dealership. I had not had a lot of exposure to MB's as they were't very common in the shops I had worked. At the time I was big on American muscle cars ( I was driving a 68' Firebird 400). I was quickly impressed with the quality, style and safety features of these cars. This was the mid 90s and they had just redesigned the E Class. The W140 chassis didn't really impress me at all. It was to boaty for my tastes. I did take a liking to the owners daily driver, a 95 500e which I had to do maintnence on once in a while and test drive, but my favorite was the R129. So fast forward about 8 years later I was in the market for a new (to me) car. I wanted something sporty, classy and topless (same features I look for in a woman). Five years later my 97 SL600 is my daily driver with about 115K mi on it and it has lived up to every expectation I had. I do have other cars in the corral, but the SL is my favorite.

Post Merc wasn't even initially on my radar

I was looking for a roadster. I checked out BMW, Audi, Porsche and a few others. A friend told me he was selling his SLK and I should check it out.

The retractable hardtop and styling "Had me at Hello".

To be fair, I did need the performance to be comparable with other vehicles I'd looked at. The Mercedes didn't disappoint and now I'm hooked!

Thumbs up The gap to BMW has been closed

In a nutshell - I think MB has the competition covered with the latest generation of C, E, and S-class models, particularly in styling and interior design....with enough performance to keep a car nut like me satisfied. The gap to BMW, in driving feel and hard numbers performance, has been closed.

Over the last 32 years, I've owned 66 cars of various types, though by far most were Euro sports or sports sedans. My background includes 20+ years of amatuer racing (SCCA/IMSA/POC/PCA), and I am a typical gearhead in that I have owned, worked on, and driven some pretty cool cars, from a 1971 OTAS (ever heard of that one? ) to my current '04 E55.

My "first" MB was a 1984 190e that was a company-provided car while doing a 1 year temporary assignment in the UK. To say the least, I was unimpressed - at the time my daily driver was a newish ('81) 911SC, and in almost all respects (except storage space), it was a far superior car in every way. Until a couple years ago, I usually had a Porsche or a BMW sedan (2002tii, 528ie, 535- x2, M3, 540i, 540 Dinan) as my daily driver. The handling and overall 'feel' of BMW's were, to me, far superior to the MB's I had driven on test drives...the ridiculously slow throttle tip-in, excessive body roll, tire squeal, etc. all turned me off.

In 2005 I was in the market for a new daily driver, as my '98 Dinan was making some pricey transmission noises (at 95K miles). I got a chance to drive an associate's E500, and I was very impressed...a couple days later my Dinan was replaced by a mid-mileage '03 E500. It has been a great driver, though I have had my share of issues with reliability (stranded twice out of state with out-of stock parts, Pano roof issues, and some electrical gremlins). At 94K miles, I decided to look into a new BMW 330, used 545 or M5, a E550, or an E55.

After driving an E55, the same day as an '05 M5 and '07 545, the decision was cake. I cannot stand the Bangle-ized BMW's, but could deal with it if the driving experience was better than the MB. Unfortunately (for BMW), to my eyes (and senses), the E55 was superior in every way. Finding a killer deal last week on a 40K mile, CPO'd '04 E55 was the clincher....my new black/black toy sits in the driveway today.

current toy list:
'03 E500 - now Wife's daily driver
'04 E55 - MY daily driver
'69 911 - vintage/SCCA GT2 racecar (owned 28 years )
'87 930T - for sale (owned 19 years!)
FFR Cobra - for fun
'05 Excursion V10 (toy puller)
