Been a firm believer in the brand since it saved my life

My 1st card was a W123, 250 model when I turned 18. The car was a donkey - did 0-60mph in 18 seconds - but my dad was smart - he knew that kids like to race, and got me something which was it's time was ultra-safe and ultra-slow.
Racing from traffic light to traffic light was an impossibility, so I didn't bother.

2nd Car was a 1986 W123 230E. I used that car for 10 years, and put 380,000 miles on it (627,000 km), mostly long distance trips. I had a very serious accident in the 230E. I was driving on the highway. The afternoon sun was ahead of me (so I had the sun-visor down), and just as I got over the crest of the hill, I came accross a car that was stopped dead in front of me. I slammed on the brakes (couldn't swerve as it was peak hour traffic), and hit the guy in front at 55mph (90kph). His car was an old Datsun (the ones which were solid).
My front bumper was found 15 feet behind my car. The Merc emblem tore off was embedded in his dashboard.
My glasses came off my face and we never found them again, but other than that and a bit of whiplash, I opened the door and walked out.

Since then, I had: Isusu SUV (what a load of rubbish), BMW 3 series diesel (which BMW couldn't repair), W123 280E, W126 (380SE, 300SEL, 560SEL), E-200K (2002), E-200K (2007), and now S600 (2005)

For me it was:

Safety: 5 * NCAP and AusCAP rating.

Performance: European Diesel in a smaller car - fuel efficiency.

Prestige: Well who doesn't like a nice badge on the front of the car? I guess comfort goes with the prestige too, and that was on our list of "must haves".

Looks: Secondary to the safety and performance of the car. We were looking for a "smallish" hatch style car.

Value: Certainly a lot of cars on the market in lower price brackets, but none of the others could meet all our needs.

Our shopping list was made up of, Small car (our other car is 4WD), Safety, European Diesel (fuel efficient), Large boot space for size of car, Comfort, unconfusing. We found many cars we tried had a very complicated instrument panel. MB is always simple and easy to follow.

Depending on the merc you buy, you say different things about yourself

If you want to show people:
1. that life didnt really turn out the way you expected it to, you buy a C-Class
2. you have money, you buy a 2008 S-class
3. that this is your wife's car, you buy an E-Class
4. that you think going over autumn leaves requires 4WD, you buy a GL-Class
5. that you are x-military, you buy a G-class
6. that you're over 50yrs old, you buy a SL-Class

But above all, if you want to show people, you have class you buy a Black 1980s 560SEL Mercedes-Benz

If you want to show people that you don't know what Mercedes-Benz is, you buy one of those funny A,B etc... classes made for the American market.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

heh, once upon a time Mercedes-Benz was a byword for shear luxury and excellence in engineering.
Now? the new S-class looks like a honda accord and has more problems than an american car. Not only that, the stitching on the seats and interior trim feels cheap.

Now someone will try be smart and say "the new s-class is more complex and so it is prune to more errors" but, _we_ are also more complex than 50yrs ago, we have more complex regression tests, simulations and integration tests. We have more money, more technology and man power than we did 50yrs ago. So dont give me that line.
