On a roll.......
Six years ago I rescued a black beauty 1988 300TE from my local Benz dealer who was going to auction off what the mechanics all said was a shame. Has original option added 16 inch AMG wheels with the center painted out, gold pinstriping and a fresh interior (the orginal owner traded the car and felt it needed a new interior so that's what it had). I was working at the dealer as a business consultant and so I bought it for a song (well at least some consulting barter time) with 192,000 miles on it. I liked the quiet graceful lines of the wagon and the solid road feel.
At 284,000 miles with hardly any problems I decided to put her up for adoption to a new home, one that hopefully will appreciate her for what she is, old and reliable. I spend all of my time on the highway and for the last six years this now 20 year old wagon has never let me down once. Not once.
My wife found a 2000 E320 4MATIC with 100,000 miles in excellent condition with the basic toys like the Xenon HID lights, CD-changer for our highway enjoyment and the eight airbags for my safetey. In Desert Silver with the Java interior and generally intact and well cared for. So, this one I plan and hope to keep for at least 200,000 more miles.
I worked at a Mercedes dealership as a business process consultant and had the luck to go through the entire sales training, and got to drive just about anything that rolled from 1971 sedans from trades to the 2001 SL55 AMG Compressor pocket rocket. But my favorite continues to be the E-class wagon for comfort, safety, and value. Maybe I can talk my wife in ten years into an old E63 AMG wagon.......Hmmm. Need to start planning for that now....
Oh yeah, the reason to buy a Benz? You might not ever need another one if you get attached to it because they are just damn fine automobiles.
