Why a Benz?

Mercedes Benz! The pinnacle of automotive quality. In movies and songs, legendary! Mercedes Benz was for the rich, to drool over at the auto shows, something beyond my reach, an ultimate dream car that just seemed unattainable.
In 2010, A friend suggested a pre-owned one, and I was amazed at what a nice '05 C240 we found. For less than the cost of a new 'ordinary' car, we found could actually own a Benz!
That car still serves us well, and in 2012 we bought our 2nd Benz, an '07 ML350. Again purchased for less than most 'lesser' cars would cost as new, we could have a Benz!
A 5 year old Benz is more solid, has the potential to last longer, performs better, is a higher quality ride, and provides much more owner satisfaction than a new ordinary car!
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

I've always liked a car combination of ample power and low engine RPM when cruising on the highway. The Mercedes offered both along with decent gas mileage for a V8. A little noted feature is the 4.6 liter engine, as compared to the smaller displacement V8's offered by several German competitors. The 4663cc engine has decent tippy-toe torque in the 1000-1500 RPM range which comes into play when inching through slow city traffic. In that RPM range, turbochargers have yet to offer much boost.

The M278 engine also has a well-thought-out cam driving system with a two stage step-down chain drive using a silent chain, which I prefer to the roller chains used on some Mercedes engines.

Finally, the 2014 E-Class is near the end of the present chassis design era and that encourages me to hope that the car will be relatively free of niggling maintenance surprises.

I spent almost the entire month of August car shopping and the thought of owning a Mercedes Benz never crossed my mind. To me, a Mercedes was always a car that I could only dream about. Anyway, after spending yet another Sunday visiting car lots, I stopped to get something to eat at a Chinese restaurant across the street from an exotic car dealer here in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

At first, I wasn't even going to waste my time going over there because I didn't think there was anything on that lot that I could afford. But then I saw a 2006 E350 that was within my price range. I immediately though that the car had to have a ton of miles on it or that I'd find a horror story on CARFAX, but I was pleasantly surprised. Low miles (52K for an 06) and only one owner.

The next day, I stopped back at the dealership, inspected it, took it for a test drive, and I was instantly hooked. I felt like Arnie Cunningham when he first sat in "Christine". The saleslady ran my numbers and I was approved for financing. I came back the next day with the down payment money I had saved up and after a bit of paperwork, I was driving it home!

Welcome to the family. Used Benz are surprisingly affordable, especially when you consider the stratospheric retail prices they command when new. They're also beautifully crafted and built.

The sad reality is that they depreciate like crazy by year four, and the reason for that is the cost of maintenance and repairs after the factory warranty ends. The best option is to find a CPO car. That'll get you 12 months of full warranty or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) plus whatever remains of the original new warranty. Since most of us finance for much longer than 12 months, it's necessary to buy an extended CPO warranty. Currently you can add an additional year of coverage and 120,000 miles for $2495, or two more years for $4495 and 135,000. (That's for an S, may be less for other models)

Having owned an S500 and an S430 before the 2010 S550 I have now, I can tell you that $4495 is a bargain. The S500 had $13,000 in CPO warranty work, and then crapped out a $6,000 transmission after the warranty expired. Lesson learned. Mercedes + No Warranty= No More Mercedes.

CPO cars must be 5 years old or newer, so now 2008's are the oldest that qualify. If you can't find a CPO car, then a 3rd party warranty is your only option. My S430 had an EasyCare warranty that was $4,000 and did pay for itself before it ran out. It's not as smooth a process as CPO repair but worth every penny.

If you're wondering why I'm telling you this AFTER you bought your car, your local credit union can help you. They're usually more than happy to refinance the loan you got at the dealer, and their rates are better, and they also offer third party warranties that can be financed into the loan. Mercury and Mile One have good programs.

I don't mean to scare anyone, and many owners roll the dice and win. Not me though. That S550 has the full $4,495 135k mile CPO for three years. At three years and a day it'll be gone.

2010 S550 Black on Black, AMG Package, Pano, Night Vision, Some other goofy crap I don't remember right now.

2004 S430 Pewter & Stone
18" Staggered Wheels, Full AMG Body kit Added, Hardwired V1, Infinity Basslink Subwoofer, mObridge Bluetooth/iPod. TRADED 8/13

2006 S500 Black/Java AMG Sport (Sold at 120k, Still Missed.)

I like Mercedes cars because of its looks. The exteriors as well as the luxury provided in the car attracts me the most.

My dealer warranty is only 3 months or 3000 miles so I made sure to get an extended warranty through a company called Preferred Warranties Inc. when I bought my car. It was $2000 for 3 years/45k miles but I think that it's definitely worth the peace of mind.

W140 V12

I was looking for a second car and there were many, many choices. A new Mercedes wasn't one of them because it was more than what I wanted to spend.

Basically, it was between small Japanese, Korean and European cars. Then I thought, maybe I should check out some used cars. Going through the classifieds I came across a CL600 (1997) for sale at half or even less than the price of a small econobox. It didn't turn out to be in good shape but the idea of being able to have a V12 was just too good to ignore and so the search began.

I almost had a deal for another CL600 (1998) but the seller changed his mind at the last moment. In my search, I had also started to look at the S600 (1992-1998) and finally I was convinced that the "S" was the better option for me.

Having looked at more than 40-50 cars, I came across a really good one and jumped on it as I had missed out on a few excellent examples before.

The V12 is intoxicating and I have to curb my constant desire to let it loose. I think its a great car. Mine is a 1998 S600 with 135000 Kms on it.

Thank you very much.
It was fun searching but also very frustrating at times as some sellers would not be very precise about the condition of their cars (Pictures can fool) and the cars would turn out to be in really poor shape. However, I enjoyed the whole exercise and in some ways miss it.
