I've owned two others a 200D (could not get out of its own way) and a 2000 ML320 (nice family vehicle I thought). I just purchased a 2003 SL500 with 36,000 miles on it. The kids are all adults so its time for me to enjoy a nice car without taking the depreciation hit.

I voted safety, but, really, it's all of the above. The first car I've had that was really mine was a merc. It was a choice between a 420SEL and a souped up camero. I looked at the camero, and had visions of the future, it was like speaking to the oracle from 300, if I buy that camero, I will race and I will crash. I looked at the merc, saw how tough the frame was, how nice it looked, test drove it and loved the performance, I loved it. My mom was disappointed I didn't get the sports car, I had a good laugh.

1) 1994 Honda Passport "The Tank" (Decomissioned)
2) 1987 420SEL "The Krunk Machine" (Destroied in service)
3) 1982 300 SD Turbo Diesel "The Bebop" (Decommissioned 6 months after reciving damage)
4) 1985 500SEL "The Big O" (Decomissioned after second powerplant failed)
5) 1979 450SL "The Neptune" (current)
6) XY 240-T4 Scooter "The Bird of Prey" (Sold)

Upcoming purchases in the next 40 years: Mini Countryman, E-class Mercedes, '34 Mercedes 500K kit car.

I bought my mercedes because it was the most economical car I could buy to drive to Italy, as it turns out, it is the most comfortable and relaxing car to drive, and steady as a rock when driving on the motorway.
The car I have is a 2001 E220 Cdi six speed manual avantgarde

Different reasons for different cars...

I bought the 1981 300SD for the Diesel engine with the hopes of brewing my own biodiesel for it. Never did make my own, but commercially made fuel was available. I also loved the look of the W126 and the safety of the car.

I bought the '86 300SDL for the comfort, the OM 603, and the extra power and mpg over the 617 powered SD. I also liked the long version of the W126 a lot. I over the technical improvements from the '81 model year as well

The '74 was a case of love at first sight! Now I am dealing with my first gasoline powered MB. I know she is not nearly as advanced as the W126s, gets half the mpg of the SDL, and has lots of quirks like having to pull the steering wheel to change a blown out instrument bulb, but I don't care
She is red headed and topless

I have always associated Mercedes with class, elegance and sophistication.

Since diesel prices in GA are crazy, I went with the old W126 gas. A 1990 300SEL on craigslist for $1000 did it for me.

I love this car. I found it cheap and relatively undefiled with 144,000 miles from the third owner. If you maintain these cars they will last forever..

When I pull into my garage at work, I always get smiles and the satisfaction that I have the only W126 in the whole place.

I voted "Value". The W210 E55 is perhaps the most reliable car of the entire 'super sedan' segment of the last 20 years, and on top of that, has very low maintenance costs - by virtue of it simply being a hot rodded E430...

Compared to its contemporaries - the E39 BMW M5, C5 Audi RS6, Jaguar S-type R... the E55 is just as fast as the M5, with virtually nothing to go wrong. The Audi is a bit quicker, but the nature of its design means it's completely unserviceable - an O2 sensor is an 18 hour job on the Audi RS6. The M5 has major design flaws - variable valve timing fails on the motor with alarming regularity, and the S62 engine from the M5 also suffers from carbon buildup that can require replacement of the engine block. The Jaguar? Well, stout engine in that thing, but electrical issus galore.

A W210 E55? It's just a standard E430 with some more displacement and slightly more aggressive suspension tuning. The M113 is a work of art for its simplicity, the 722.6 is stout and reliable... it's a masterpiece of a car. AND it's also suitably low key...

Amazing value for the money spent - $12,000 gets you a depreciated super sedan that'll last you til 300k miles without any MAJOR issues... of course fuel expenses are high... but that's just par for the course!

I bought my first M-B 300D about 20 years ago & have owned MANY since then, for the SAME reason. = I'm too much of a cheapskate to drive any other FULL-SIZE car except a Diesel - Some of the GUNK that I've run a 240D on makes me SHUDDER these days.

MY current diesel is a 1986 300SDL & it is NOT for sale, at any price, unless I can find a <100,000 mile 1987 300SDL.. = It's in my will, to be given to my daughter! ====> "Noe" is a CAR-CHICK & will care for my car.
(Should I find a suitable 1987, I'll give my daughter "The Gray Ghost".)

I was visiting my Son in Monrovia , Ca. last week and a W-124 Mercedes Pickup went zooming by .

it was really well done , the bed & tail gate finishing made it look factory .

After selling my previous fun car, a 1991 Nissan 300zx (Fairlady), triple black with T-tops, I knew I needed a replacement. Wifey didn’t really like riding in it due to the wind turbulence in the cabin, noise, and rather stiff ride. So, I was sitting there trying to figure out how to buy a performance sports car with a convertible and not mess up Wifey’s hair. Then it hit me, if anyone could design a car with both my and Wifey’s needs in mind it was Mercedes. Off I went looking for a triple black SL500 (R129) and found one with a panoramic roof, just like my old T-tops. No manual shifter, but I was kind of tired of shifting anyway. We took a test drive and Wifey was sold, and so was I. A few months later we closed the deal and had a beautiful 1997 SL500 and we couldn’t be happier with our decision!
