Don't get me wrong. I love a fast and powerful car and I have had more than a few,
but having a few years on you and being forced 'get by' on Social Insecurity,
I simply cannot afford one any longer.

That's one of the reason I drive a CDI.
I simply cannot afford to spend double what I am now spending on fuel.
I'm getting double the fuel economy of the three E-55s that are listed on Fuelly.

Lucky you. How many kilometers do you drive in a year?

Probably about 25K miles per year. I really have no dispute with your stand on the mileage issue. Frankly I'm just an old f--t enjoying a second childhood with my S55

Who can blame you!

You put about 3x more miles on your car a year than I do, which is why I don't care a lick about diesel fuel economy.

I do know that diesel comes at roughly a 30% premium over petrol, which means you need at least 30% better fuel mileage than a petrol car to break even.

Not at all TRUE! Where is that?

Many of us, especially those of us out West cannot 'get by' traveling ONLY eight thousand miles a year!
That's why I drive a diesel and have since 1966.

Where I buy my D2, I pay less than eleven (11) percent more for fuel. I run my CDI for less than $0.12 per mile.
Price there is $3.959 per gallon whereas regular is $ 3.569 per gallon.

Thumbs down

It looked really good and very well taken care of inside and out, and also had a big sign with a very tempting price. My C320 is my first and last Mercedes.

Luxury was my initial reason, but learned to love the performance, and value is declining. The last 10k service visit resulted in 9k recommended service. Independent Benz shop took me under car and showed me all recommended items were fine.

There will always be the issue between fuel economy and insane performance. I'm simply glad that the 3 point star comes with all variants.
We have similar views on performance and economy although I've got a different solution for myself. My CDI is a great daily driver and I enjoy the mid thirties fuel economy but when I feel the urge for a little outrageous speed thrill I turn to the other half of my "twin turbo" and open the right hand garage door. No compromise here - speed on one hand, economy on the other.

Hi Ahenthus. I know where you're coming from. While the S55 has exhilarating performance for a 4 dr. sedan The Porsche 930 is just a step above but it should be considering the size/ weight comparison. I had a 930 about 20 yrs ago and it was capable of scaring me at the time. The cognoscenti all said that if you went into a hard corner 10 times you would likely come out 10 times in a 928 and maybe (if you were really good) 9 times in a 930. The 930 was the only car I've ever had where you left your head at the curb - you drove the car with your butt because that was a better indicator of traction that what your head told you. If you've driven the 930 hard you know what I mean. have fun driving
